Detailed Review of Giggles

Ah… Giggles.  Heard so many good things about this playground but took me so long to visit.  I have been going to the area A LOT btw, but there were so many other places on my checklist!

etc etc etc… And I’m not even done yet! I still haven’t visited Zaffron Kitchen and Ju Shin Jung.  For goodness sake, I don’t even stay in the East! Bring some fun to the North please?

Okay, back to Giggles.  So FINALLY, I got down to visiting Giggles last week, motivated by their newly opened Sensory Room and Water Wonderland!

Fun at Giggles Sensory Room

Let’s start with their new extensions, shall we? The sensory room is a cosy room dedicated to children aged 3 and below.

When we first entered, the lights were not switched on.  When the staff noticed us wandering in, he quickly came over to switch on the lights and told us that this room was built to stimulate the 5 senses.  He went on to explain to us how to make use of the various sections of the room.  Now, that’s how you run a playground! Thumbs up to the staff! Helloooo to Ho2T across the road? Get some pointers on customer service from them, will ya??

The staff showed us the tactile wall, asking MY to touch the tiles and penguin.

fun at giggles marine parade sensory room 2

Oh well, MY was only interested in making noise with the musical bells at the corner.

fun at giggles marine parade sensory room 3

Next to the tactile wall was a toy rack FULL OF TOYS.  I’ve been to enough ‘kids-friendly’ establishments to know that just because there is a toy rack does not mean that there will be toys.  (Just like having a train table doesn’t mean there will be trains.. *roll eyes*) So I was very happy to see the toy rack here brimming with toys!

Next to the toy rack was an igloo made of plastic bottles.

The staff explained that it was a bonding corner, for parent and child to spend some quiet time together.  The kids could even write messages and put them into the bottles.  Message in a bottle – indoor playground style?

fun at giggles marine parade sensory room 6

MY didn’t seem too keen to bond with me inside the igloo.  We have spent enough hours bonding in a quiet enclosed space (read: our home), now was the time to be free! All he did was to take out bottle caps.  After about 5 caps, he got bored and ran out.

Outside, there was a corner with 3 water-filled tubes.

fun at giggles marine parade sensory room 8

MY did the obvious (and correct) thing of running over and pressing the buttons.

fun at giggles marine parade sensory room 9

And woohoo! Each tube emitted a different coloured light!

I thought this room was excellent for babies and young toddlers.  Considering Giggles offered free entry for babies under 1, the inclusion of this facility was awesome!

Fun at Giggles Water Wonderland

The other newly set up room was their Water Wonderland.

Swimming diapers were sold at the counter (for an exorbitant $3 per piece), but you wouldn’t need it.  You’ll see why later.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 3

There were some art smock hanging at the entrance, how thoughtful!  Help yourselves to one if you forgot to bring extra clothing for your kids.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 2

After your kids have donned on the art smock and taken off their socks, they can enter for some water play!

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 4

There was a table of water with many toys floating around inside.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 5

Initially, all MY was interested in was getting his hands wet.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 6

So I showed how to play with some of the water toys and he was intrigued!

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 8

If your kid is too short to reach the table, they had little steps at the side to give the kids a boost! However, I felt the steps were a bit too soft and unstable.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 7

There was a table that was like a combination of Megablock and AquaPlay.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 9fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 10

Next, there was a inflatable tub with some water and balls inside.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 11fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 12

The water was very shallow, which is why I didn’t think you would need swimming diapers.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 13

MY didn’t even get his butt wet when he squatted down!

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 14

MY decided there was too little water in the tub and started transferring water from the table to the tub… Lol!

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 15

At the end of the room, there was a wooden pirate-ship like structure.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 16

I was wondering if there was any exciting water play in that structure, but nope. It was all dry and empty.

fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 17fun at giggles marine parade water wonderland 18

Overall, I wouldn’t exactly called this a water WONDERLAND.  But considering this facility was included in the admission fee for the playground, I thought it was a refreshing idea that could be further improved. The only other indoor playground that tried setting up water play was Tickle Tickle, but there was no clear boundary for the water play area.  In the end, the floor was all wet and my boy got his socks wet.  So I thought the water play at Giggles was much better executed, with a room exclusively for water play where kids had to remove their socks first before entering.

Fun at Giggles Events Room

Between the sensory room and water wonderland, there was a small events room.

There was a swing inside, but my kids have never been fans of swings.

fun at giggles marine parade events room 2

MY decided to play hide and seek with the ring cushions!

Fun at Giggles Active Play Area

After we finished exploring the 3 rooms, we crossed over to the main play area of Giggles.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 4

In terms of active play, this area was not big.  But it was pretty unique.  I felt like I had entered Angry Birds Park, with all those wooden structure!

fun at giggles marine parade active play 8

The obstacles were pretty gym-like and more suitable for older kids.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 5fun at giggles marine parade active play 6

There were two slides.  The smaller slide was easily reached by two year-old MY.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 9

It was super slippery and MY LOVED it!!  He deliberately flew off the end of the slide and landed on the floor!

fun at giggles marine parade active play 10

The other slide had to be accessed either via the rock-climbing wall or the rope ladder, both of which were too challenging for MY.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 11

So I had to carry him up each time he wanted to go on the slide. Super tiring for me! But seeing his happy face on the slide made it worth it.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 12

In the middle of the area was a ball pit, with a basketball hoop for the kids to throw the balls into.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 19

To reinforce the notion of how similar this place was to Angry Birds Park, check out the Sona.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 2

If you have never been to Angry Birds Park, let me show you what I’m talking about.

Same Sona at Angry Birds Park.

Same right??? But Giggles came before Angry Birds Park, so I give Giggles credit for being innovative.

The big question mark I had was, why did they invest in the Sona, only to block the play area with gym equipment??

fun at giggles marine parade active play 3

The Sona games required kids to run and jump around the various numbers quickly.  All those gym equipment was more of a safety hazard imo.

Giggles also had many toys for pretend play at the side.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 15

MY loved ride-on vehicles and there was quite a variety here.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 13fun at giggles marine parade active play 14

MY was super happy to find a box of train tracks and trains! Yes, as always, spend a bomb to bring the kid to a playground and he plays with things he has at home.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 18

There were also two activity boards.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 17

And costumes for dressing up! It was quite funny to see a little bunny and little tiger running around the playground when I was there.  Thankfully MY didn’t freak out.  (He totally freaked out when his older brother once wore an alligator costume at Cool De Sac.)

fun at giggles marine parade active play 16

And at the far end of the playground was a sensory play section for older kids.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 20

I totally LOVE this sensory play board!! I looks like something we should set up at home? Or.. maybe not. I think my boys would destroy it within a week.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 21

Close-up please.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 22

Doesn’t it looks fabulous? Considering this was the last playground to visit on my current list of indoor playgrounds, I was amazed that I could still find so many unique play elements that I haven’t seen in other playgrounds.  Really, I think we have enough of Singkids and Polliwogs type of playgrounds.  Giggles has clearly found a way to differentiate themselves.  No wonder I kept hearing good things about this place.

Other Activities at Giggles

If all the above are not enough for your kids (which I find hard to believe), you can purchase some craft activities for them to do.

fun at giggles marine parade active play 1

There was also a party area, right next to the active play area, where you can hold your kids’ birthday parties!

fun at giggles marine parade active play 24

If you need to use the washroom, it is located near the water wonderland.  You need to get the keys from the staff.  At the corner of the active play area, there was a nursing room.

Update: Second Visit to Fun at Giggles (28 June 2015)

I visited Fun at Giggles again, this time with BOTH kids! A quick run-through of some of the changes / things I missed out from the first visit.

The rubber pool in the water wonderland is no longer there.  According to the owner, it was spoilt and she’s still on a lookout for a suitable replacement.

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 01

I noticed some toys for sale in the water wonderland.

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 02

Back in the main play area, I realized there was a railing with a hoop for the kids to move through it.  It reminded me of the game I used to play with a kid, where I had to move a hoop through a wire and it would buzz if the hoop touched the wire?

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 16Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 17

I also saw LOCKERS! Not sure why I didn’t notice it previously?

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 04

Also, I saw some colouring materials at the table near the entrance.  And more importantly, I saw parents munching McDonalds take-away there.  The owner told me they allow parents to bring outside food in to dine at the playground. That’s AWESOME.  If you follow my blog, you know I LOVE it when playgrounds allow us to bring outside food in.  Better still when Fun at Giggles has a hawker centre and McD right downstairs.

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 03

This is the first time my 4 year old visited Fun at Giggles.  Here is him having a rolling good time, literally!

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 08

The smaller slide was a tad too short for him, the bigger slide was fun though.

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 06

So he spent most of his time going up and down the bigger slide.

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 05

He also spent quite a bit of time in the ball pit practicing his basketball skill.

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 07

He also overcame the obstacle course around the playground with ease.

And the best part was… The little brother saw his elder brother going through the obstacle course and decided to try it out too! In our previous visit when he was here alone, he was totally reluctant to try any of them out and kept making me carry him up to the top of the big slide.  But when he saw his elder brother climbing up, he decided to try climbing and found that he could climb up on his own!

The staff here was really great and on the ball.  I was chatting with the owner at the water wonderland side and the kids were playing on their own in the main play area.  I was wondering why my 2 year old didn’t come running over to look for me.  When I went over to take a look, I realized it was because there was a staff member playing with him!

Fun at Giggles Indoor Playground Marine Parade 20

Overall, this playground catered well for children aged from 1 to 6.  Although the wooden active play structure and obstacles may not be suitable for the young toddlers, there are toys for pretend play and the water wonderland side plus sensory room are great for them. Children aged 3 and above can challenge the obstacle courses, which is something different from the other indoor playgrounds.

[disclaim]Disclosure:  My second visit to Fun at Giggles was a free invitation.  The first visit was not sponsored in any way and I paid normal admission for my boy then.[/disclaim]

Fun at Giggles Admission Fee (Play Rates)

Their walk-in rate was $20 for kids < 3 years old and $28 for kids > 3 Years old.  This entitled the kid to unlimited play time on weekdays / 2 hours playtime during weekends and public holidays.  On weekdays, re-entry was allowed.  So you could pop down to the Marine Parade hawker centre just downstairs for lunch and pop back up to continue playing!

If you plan to visit frequently, you should get their membership.  For just $60, on top of getting discounted entries, you will receive 1 free entry + another 3 free entries during your child’s birthday month! That is already more than $60 worth of visits!
