After an $8 million makeover, the old Bottle Tree Park at Yishun is now a new leisure park called Orto. Since I consider myself a ground-head-snake of Yishun, let me bring you on a virtual tour of this multi-million dollar facility in my neighbourhood!
Leisure Activities at Orto
The Fishing Paradise here was pretty popular. Every time I was here, there were quite a number of anglers, sitting around the large fishing pond and chatting away, waiting for a fish to take their bait.
They had a Beginners’ Pond that was recommended for families with young children.
The best part of the Beginners’ Pond was that they charged based on number of catches! I wondered if that meant I didnt need to pay anything if I caught nothing? I should try it out one day!

Opening Hours: 8am till late

Prawning @ ORTO
The next most popular activity at Orto was prawning. They had prawning ponds and yabby ponds here.
And like any prawning facility, you could BBQ your catches on the spot and eat them fresh!

Longkang Fishing @ ORTO
Popular among younger children is the longkang fishing facility at ORTO!
The Longkang Fishing here was for children aged 4 to 12 years old.
It cost $12 per child. And unlike Fish @ Big Splash, there was NO TIME LIMIT and NO LIMIT ON THE NUMBER OF FISHES here! Furthermore, the tank was INCLUDED in the fee!
I liked the Longkang Fishin here so much better than Fish @ Big Splash. On top of being cheaper, the fishes were really easy to catch! On first sight, it looked like there weren’t many fishes in the longkang. But look closely and you would find them all gathered around the rocks.
MF went around the rocks and waved his fishing net around and immediately caught some fishes!
MF and his two cousins were there for at most an hour before it started raining and we had to stop. And look how many fishes they caught!
MF was super proud of his catches!
Do note that the longkang fishing at ORTO is only open on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

Dining at ORTO
SGMY & Quench Bistro & Bar
SGMY and Quench occupy a shared facility next to the prawning area. SGMY serves local food such as nasi lemak while Quench is a bistro & bar that serves alcoholic drinks and finger food.
SGMY is great for family dining. They have Kids Meal on their menu. I haven’t tried it personally but my sister did and she said the portions were very generous.
I loved their signature nasi lemak.
Quench and SGMY share a common menu. But do note that items on Quench’s menu is subject to service charge and GST,
whereas items on SGMY’s menu is NETT priced. (Update September 2015: SGMY started charging for service charge and GST as well.)
In the evenings, they have candle-lit tentages which look super romantic! Each tentage can accommodate up to 6 people which makes it great even for family dining.

Long Jiang Chinos
Long Jiang Chinos was the only Chinese restaurant at ORTO. It offered modern Chinese cuisine, and they had an alfresco terrace which you could book for private events.
Update 20/6/2015: Father’s Day Celebration at Long Jiang Chinos (Review)
Our family went to Long Jiang Chino for Father’s Day celebrations. We had a total of 9 adults and 6 children + 1 baby in stroller. They did not have a table big enough to accommodate all of us, so we had to split into 2 tables.
All their seating were non-air-conditioned. They had one section under a permanent shelter.
Another section was not sheltered and nearer to the fishing pond – which is great if Al Fresco dining is your cup of tea.
We chose the non-sheltered section and it turned out to be an excellent choice because the weather was FANTASTIC when we were there! It was extremely breezy and I loved the natural wind. And more importantly, check out the sky when we were there.
It was totally awesome to be dining under that sky! And even better still, there was NDP rehearsal going on and we saw the fighter planes flying by!
Anyway they do have shelters which they will open up in the event it rains. Thankfully it didn’t rain when we were there. Check out how the beautiful sky reflected off the lazy suzy.
Beautiful sky and beautiful scenery while we dined. What more could we ask for?
Oh right.. Good food. Let me give you a run-down of the food we ordered so that you can have a gauge of the food pricing here. As mentioned earlier, we split into 2 tables and the table I was at had 4 adults and 3 children who didn’t eat a lot. We ordered the following:
Overall, I pretty liked the food here. There were some hit and misses. The pork turned out to be a great dish for the kids because it was very tender (we were initially worried that it may be too tough for the kids). The kids also loved the Hakka Tofu which was so easy to pop into their mouth. The fried rice was pretty special because they mixed brown rice and white rice, giving it a different texture from other restaurants’ fried rice.
As for the misses, I’m not sure if the bamboo clam was really worth the price. And the blacken noodles were pretty blah. If you are looking for a noodle dish, the la-la bee hoon which the other table ordered was much nicer. (Sorry, not sure what the official glam name of this dish is and how much it cost because it was the other table that ordered it)
After the kids finished their meal, they had some fun standing by the pond and watching the fishes. (Frankly I couldn’t see any fishes but the kids claimed they could see the fishes. Oh well, whatever, as long as it kept them entertained.)
I recommend this restaurant for special occasions. The best time to dine is in the early evening, before the sky turns dark. Because after dark, I did notice that insects started to gather around the lamps.
Information on Long Jiang Chinos:
Lunch – 11:30am – 2:30pm (last order 2:15 pm)
Dinner – 5:30pm – 10:30pm (last order 10:15 pm)
* Closed every Monday unless it falls on an eve of Public Holiday or Public Holiday.
Lotus Pond at ORTO
Not long after ORTO opened, we visited and there was a beautiful lotus pond. Okay, I can’t find the pictures I took of the lotus then, but here’s a photo of what it looked like in March from ORTO’s Facebook page:
When I visited again, this was what was left of it:
Half of it had dried up already. Pretty sad huh. RIP Lotuses.
There was no nursing facility at ORTO when I visited, but there was a diaper-changing table in the handicap toilet at the complex where Long Jiang Chinos / Taste Garden / Mookata was.
