If you follow my blog, you will know I have an obsession with themed cafes, themed hotels etc. Yes, they are gimmicky and touristy, but heck, I love being touristy. So far I haven’t visited a themed cafe in Singapore that I am truly impressed with (because Japan sets the bar real high), that is until I visited Hungry Heroes Cafe at Tessensohn Road!
My 4 year old boy was pretty crazy over Avengers. So that was a perfect excuse to visit Hungry Heroes cafe. (Though frankly, I would visit it anyway even if he hates superheroes because I’m a sucker for theme cafes.)
Where themed cafes are concerned, it is ALL ABOUT DETAILS. And Hungry Heroes impressed me right from the entrance!
Look at the door handle – specially custom made!
And the signs and menus, beautifully designed to fit the theme.
Don’t you feel excited to enter already?? Hold your breath, we’re going to enter!
Hungry Heroes Cafe Decorations (1st Storey)
Hungry Heroes Cafe occupies a 2-storey shophouse. Let’s take a look at the ground floor first.
There was a long row of screens showing a pretty cute animation of Hungry Heroes Cafe. MF was shrieking, “MUMMY!! Come and see, there’s LEGO!!” Watch it and you’ll understand. I won’t spoil it for you.
Right above the TV screens were many Superhero models in showcases.
Other than models, the walls were also covered with numerous posters depicting superheroes!
And equally beautifully framed movie posters!
Check out the super awesome IRONMAN standing guard over the food counter. Fierce!
And the collection of busts!
There was a showcase of guns and other weapons. This, I could not understand. I thought Superheroes did not use guns?
And more guns decorated the ceiling! Though I was more impressed by the Ironman busts sticking out from the wall like taxidermy.
Alright, if that was not good enough for you, let’s go UPSTAIRS!
Hungry Heroes Cafe Decorations (2nd Storey)
We walked up the long flight of stairs, admiring the posters on both sides.
And the second storey was simply AMAZING!!! The kids were in AWE! They went around excitedly checking out all the decorations.
Check out the life-size sculptures of Batman and Superman!! They were SO COOL!!
And THAT LIGHT. Pay attention to that light please!
Effort, my friends. EFFORT. That’s how you run a themed cafe. They covered the whole light with Superhero toys!
Zoom in please!
If Batman and Superman are too passe for you, check out the life-size sculptures on the other side. AVENGERS style!
MF was screaming,”MUMMY!! THE IRONMAN GOT LIGHT!!” (Never mind the Singlish.)
It’s crazy right?? There was light coming out, like a real Ironman!!
Okay, let’s look around at what other decorations were on the walls! More movie posters! So Transformers are also Superheroes now?? Not that I minded.. My kids LOVE Transformers and MF was ecstatic to see the Transformers posters.
The boys were also pretty tickled by the ‘car’!
There was a giant wall mural of Superheroes having their last supper. (Okay, the picture reminded me of The Last Supper, not sure if it was intentional but I think it was.)
And there was a section for Superheroes Meetings!
Superheroes Conference in Progress? (My boys make crappy poster boys as usual. So uncooperative!)
And even the toilet was not spared! Now THAT’s what I call a theme cafe. Make sure you decorate the toilet as well!
And super touristy me couldn’t leave without taking photos with the Superheroes!
Hungry Heroes Cafe Food & Menu
Okay, by the time I was done taking photos, the food we ordered was almost gone. (With kids like these, who needs to diet?)
Before eating, don’t forget to check out the table setting.
Don’t neglect that placemat! Take some time to read through it, it was pretty interesting. So much effort to come out with those articles to suit our local context!
That ‘newspaper’ was also used to decorate the plates for serving the food. So at least there was some effort put in to incorporate the theme into the food! And oh, that steak. Medium done the way I like it.
And they serve water! Gosh, nowadays it seems I need to pay for water everywhere. But nope, they do not charge for water here.
There was no kids menu at Hungry Heroes Cafe. However they had Mac & Cheese ($5++) in their Sides menu which we ordered for the kids.
Hungry Heroes Cafe Staff
I think this deserves special mention. Hungry Heroes Cafe is the most well-staff cafe in Singapore I have visited in a long long time. There were SO many service staff around! And they were all super friendly and enthusiastic about their job. (I think the atmosphere and vibe of the cafe just rubs off on anyone in there.) They are probably super used to people taking photos of the cafe, so they will move out of the way once they see you holding up a camera… Lol.
