Today was the first day of the SG50 Aerial Display by The Republic of Singapore Air Forces (RSAF). The aerial display takes place at 12noon on 7, 8, 9 August 2015 at Marina South.
But where in Marina South are the best places to view the aerial display?
Most people lined up the shore next to Marina South Pier. Which I think is a FANTASTIC view point. Provided it does not rain. And your kids don’t drop into the water.
The other view point was the rooftop of Marina South Pier. This again was a fantastic place to view the aerial display.
There was even a playground there to entertain the kids while waiting.
But the rooftop was closed to more people by the time we arrived at 11.30am. And it wasn’t entirely sheltered.
So where did we go?
Here. Stewords Riverboat Restaurant.
You see, I had kind of recced the place before. Not deliberately really. I was bringing the kids to Singapore Maritime Gallery. And while we were there, we saw the rehearsal for the flypast going on.
And considering how ulu this place was when I was there, I decided then that this was an awesome place to view any flypast.
Furthermore, Marina South Pier was well-connected by MRT (Marina South Pier station on NSL). And we made the right decision to go there by train today. Because apparently there was a 2-hour traffic jam to get into the bay area this morning??
So back to Stewords Riverboat Restaurant. I was worried that many people would have the same idea as me, so I did call up beforehand to make a reservation. They opened at 12 for lunch, which was the starting time of the aerial display. So I made reservation for 12. We were hoping to go in and get settled before 12 so that we did not miss any bit of the display. But security was pretty strict about not allowing anyone near the platform before the restaurant opened.
So at 12 sharp, we headed to Stewords Riverboat!
To my surprise, we were the ONLY PEOPLE there!! Another family came halfway through the display, and that was it. Maybe people just didn’t want to spend money, or they thought they would have a better view of the display from the coast and would only come in for lunch after the display. (The restaurant did get a little more crowded after the display ended.)
For some reason, the aerial display did not start at 12 sharp. But that worked in our favour. We had time to go around the riverboat to see where we could get the best view of the display. And we went to the side of the riverboat facing the coast. Where there were CHAIRS for us to sit down!
As we waited and waited, the sky started getting darker and darker. We were quite worried that the display may get cancelled.
But after some time, we finally saw the planes coming!! MF got SUPER excited and jumped off his seat. So did I.
The view from Stewords Riverboat was awesome. Look how close we could see the planes! It was flying across our heads!!
It started to rain. The people on the coast started whipping out their umbrellas, but we could see that the umbrellas were obstructing their view. Many scrambled as the rain got heavier and heavier.
And the rain just had to come down hard right before the aerial display got exciting.
Lucky us, we were fully sheltered on Stewords Riverboat. So we continued watching the aerial display while staying totally dry and comfortable!
Our food was ready by then and we decided to go in and eat while watching.
And every time we heard the planes coming, the boys would scramble to the window to see them.
So if you are planning to view the aerial display over the next 2 days, but worried about getting drenched if it rains again, you may want to make your reservation for Stewords Riverboat. The food was not bad at all. And not that expensive. We ordered ribs, fish & chips, buffalo wings and a kids pasta, the total bill was SGD80.
I shall do a more detailed review of Stewords Riverboat when I have the time. That’s not really the point of this post. And I’m not a food blogger. So that’s kind of low on my priority. (Sleep is higher priority.) That’s it for now. Happy Jubilee Weekend everyone!!
