The Skyline Luge is a major attraction on Sentosa, a recreational island in Singapore.  Why do I say major? Because in the 10 years it has been here, it has welcomed more than 10 MILLION riders!! 10 million!!! If you were not 1 of these 10 million, let me show you what you have missed out.

About Skyline Luge

The luge is a three-wheeled gravity ride that allows the rider to control the speed of the cart as it rolls down the hill.

Skyline Luge has 5 locations in New Zealand, Canada and Singapore.  The original luge was opened in 1985 at Rotorua, New Zealand.

Due to its popularity, Skyline opened another luge at Queenstown in New Zealand’s South Island.

Skyline subsequently went international, opening two luge locations in Canada at Mount Tremblant and Calgary.

Their desire for a location that could be operational throughout the year brought them to sunny Singapore!

Can kids ride the luge?

This family-friendly attraction allows for toddlers who are above 85cm in height to join in! The little one can ride on the lap of his or her parent, and there is even a tiny handle just for them to hold on to.

Age and height restrictions for children

  • Min. height 85cm to ride with an adult
  • Min. height 135cm to ride alone

  • 6yrs and 110cm or taller to ride Luge alone
  • Children under the age of 6 years can ride tandem with an adult

Sentosa Skyride

At Sentosa, the luge course runs down the hill between 2 stations. The top station is located near Imbiah Station, and the lower station is located near Beach station on the Sentosa Express.  If you arrive from the lower station, catch a ride to the top via the Sentosa Skyride!

The skyride is similar to chairlifts used for skiing.  They do not stop while you are boarding / alighting.  The staff would help to carry little children onto the chairlift.  But if necessary, they would stop the chairlift to allow for the young ones to board / alight safely.

Shortly after you board the skyride, look out for the huge banner asking you to smile for the camera!

Look at the camera and give a huge SMILE!

Continue the ride up and enjoy the scenery of the beach, the sea and the cable cars!

Before you know it, you would have arrived at the top station for the luge!

The kids LOVED the Skyride!!

If you ride in the evening, you would be able to catch the sunset.  (Provided it is not super cloudy like when we were there. >_< )

Sentosa Skyline Luge Singapore 28

If you ride while the ‘Wings of Time‘ show is going on, you can even watch snippets of the light show on board!

Currently the show is at 7.40pm and 8.40pm daily.  The show is about 25 minutes long, and at the end of the show, there are fireworks! So time your Skyride well to catch the fireworks from high up!

Once you arrive at the top station, the first thing you do is to grab a helmet.

Sentosa Skyline Luge Singapore 15

If you are uncomfortable with the thought of sharing helmets, I spotted someone wearing his own bicycle helmet.

The helmets come in different sizes, so dig around for the little ones (green colour) for the little kids.

Once you’ve put on a fitting helmet, you are ready to go! The boys couldn’t wait!

There are two queues.  The one on the right are for first timers without a hand-stamp.  The one of the left are are riders who have a hand-stamp, members or riders with the express pass.

Sentosa Skyline Luge Singapore 22

So remember: If you are riding more than once, once you have gotten the hand-stamp after your first ride, join the left queue for your second ride (and onwards)!

The hand-stamp is your passport to join the express queue for subsequent rides!

The queue on the right for the 1st luge ride for the day can be extremely long.

If you do not wish to queue, you can purchase an express pass.  But before you decide to purchase an express pass, you may want to check the queue timing.  We were there all day, sometimes there was a snaking long queue, sometimes there was no queue.

After completing a quick course on how to use the luge, you are ready to go! Choose between 2 trails: Jungle Trail or Dragon Trail.  The jungle trail is 628 metres long and the dragon trail is 688 metres long.

And off we went! We successfully completed our first ride and the kids LOVED it!

Both trails were well shaded by the surrounding trees.  But still, this is Singapore.  We were sweating like crazy after 2 rounds in the morning!

Just what I need to cool myself down on a hot day!

So what did we do? We came back in the evening for Night Luging!

Sentosa Skyline Luge Singapore 29

I LOVED the night luge! Why?

  1. No baking in the hot hot sun on the Skyride.
  2. As I mentioned earlier, we managed to catch bits of the ‘Wings of Time’ light show and fireworks from the Skyride.
  3. The blinking coloured lights added to the adrenaline rush!

I found the lights along the Jungle Trail to be more colourful than the Dragon Trail.

Sentosa Skyline Luge Singapore 31Sentosa Skyline Luge Singapore 32

I was so glad I stayed until the night time to enjoy the night luging! As their slogan goes, “Once is never enough”.  I recommend purchasing multiple rides combo to enjoy both daytime and nightime luging!

We visited Sentosa Island when my son was a toddler so didn’t try out the Luge. But now he is 7 I really wan to go back there are so many more activities that we could enjoy like the Luge.

Yeah, I feel more and more adventurous as my kids grow older. When they were young there was so much we couldn’t do. Love it when they are more grown up, at least where traveling is concerned. Do try the luge the next time you’re in Sentosa!

We went there in 2012. It was SO much fun! I love activities that the whole family can get into, from the small ones to the not-so small. 😉

I was quite worried the small ones would be scared initially. But turned out they were speed junkies and the faster we went, the happier they were!

Oops, I mean we went to the Rotorua one in 2012. Hit return too soon!

Ah… You only went to Rotorua? Didn’t go to the one at Queenstown? We did a South-to-North NZ trip and went both! I totally forgot I went for the Rotorua one, only remembered the Queenstown one because it was soooo scenic. Until I was digging through my old NZ photos for this post, that I realized I did go for the Rotorua one too! Lol… Didn’t realize I was such a luge addict that I went for 2 luges in one trip.

The skyline luge is really fun, I never missed a chance to do it! Did it twice during my NZ trip (at Queenstown and Rotorua). Glad to have it in my own country!

Thank you for sharing this. It’s not something I have ever considered doing, but you make it look fun. Maybe we will give it a try sometime.

I tried the luge in New Zealand many years back and it was great fun! But I never thought of bringing my young kids there. Glad I eventually did it = the kids had so much fun riding in tandem with the adults!
