Shangri-la Hotel Singapore Review - Bumble Bee Mum

Where luxury hotels are concerned, the Shangri-La name needs little introduction.  But do you know that Shangri-La Hotel Singapore was THE first Shangri-La hotel?

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 02

As we entered the grand lobby of Shangri-La Hotel Singapore, we felt like we were entering a part of history.  This was where THE Shangri-La story all began!

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 01

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore boasts acres of wonderfully landscaped gardens to allow guests to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.  I took special notice of the fresh orchids all around the hotel.  Orchid is the national flower of Singapore. While we felt like we were on vacation from the moment we stepped into the hotel, the orchids around gave us a sense of home.

The hotel had three wings: Tower Wing, Garden Wing and Valley Wing.  We were invited to a stay under their ‘Family Stays for Free‘ promotion which included a stay at the Tower Wing’s Horizon Grand Premier Rooms.  Being guests of the Horizon Grand Premier Rooms, we were given a room on a high floor of the Tower Wing with access to the Horizon Club Lounge.

Horizon Grand Premier Room

The Horizon Grand Premier Room was a whopping 72 square metres.  When I told my friend that, she was like, “That’s the size of a 3-room flat!!” No kidding.

The moment we stepped in, we couldn’t help noticing the fresh orchids decorating the room.

And keeping up with their promise to provide the best hospitality, there was a personalised note with a box of pralines waiting for us in the room.

We also found a fresh fruit platter and a tea set that reminded me of my late grandmother.  Seriously, that tea set was so nostalgic!  The fruit knife was razor sharp though, so make sure you get to it before the kids.

Thankfully the little one did not notice the knife and went straight for the banana.  LIKE A BOSS.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 09

There were also two welcome kits waiting for the children.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 08

The kids love receiving these goodie bags from hotels and couldn’t wait to see what was inside!

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 13

The bear was so CUTE! It even had a little backpack and the boys went to put their toy cars inside.. lol!

Okay, back to the room.  The room had a big king-sized bed and we were provided one more complimentary roll-away bed under the ‘Family Stays Free’ package.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 12

The toilet was bigger than my room at home.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 15

There was a huge bathtub which the kids LOVE.  Bath tubs are their favourite part of hotel stays.  And there was a separate shower – which was great because I could shower after coming back from our swim while the boys took their time to soak in the bath tub.

There were two spaces in the room next to the full-length windows which offered unobstructed views.  One was a work space with a desk and the other was a relaxing space with sofa and magazines.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 10

The kids had fun standing by the windows and checking out the scenery.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 11

And they also had fun checking out the electronic curtains. -_-

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 17

There was more than enough space for the four of us.  We had a lot of fun lounging around the various parts of the room, watching TV and reading the papers that were hanging on the door first thing in the morning.

Horizon Club Lounge

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 20

Throughout our stay, when we were not in the room, we were usually at the Horizon Club Lounge.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 21

The lounge was located at the top floor of the Tower Wing.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 28

Again, I couldn’t help noticing the fresh orchids around the lounge.

Magazines and newspapers were provided.

Throughout the day, coffee, tea, soft drinks and bottled water was available at the lounge.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 26

From 2pm to 4.30pm daily, high tea was served at the lounge.

The ‘Family Stays Free’ package included late check-out at 6pm, so we went for the high tea on both days we were there and noticed there were changes to the food selection between the two days.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 23 (2)

Before we had enough time to digest our high tea, canapes were served from 5pm to 8pm.

Not only were we treated to a buffet of exquisite canape, we had free flow of alcoholic drinks! Wine, beer or cocktail.. take your pick!

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 33

I haven’t had much opportunity to enjoy a cocktail since I had kids.  This was a real treat for me!

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 34

The beers and wines were left at the counters for us to help ourselves to freely.

Cocktails had to be ordered from the service staff and there was a list for us to choose from.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 30

Although the cocktails and canapes were served till 8pm, children were only allowed to access the Horizon Club Lounge up to 6pm.  So slightly after 6pm, the staff came over to tell us politely that the children’s access time was up and asked if we wanted to pack some food back to the room to eat!  So yeah… There was no need to gobble down all the canape within 1 hour.  You can pack the food back to your room to enjoy!

Breakfast

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 36

Complimentary breakfast at The Line was included in our ‘Family Stays Free’ package.  The Line is one of the most popular buffet restaurants in Singapore, well known for both quantity and quality of food served.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 37 Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 38

We barely scrapped the surface in terms of the sheer variety of food available.  There were several live cooking sections available.

Swimming Pool

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 40

A visit to the hotel pool is mandatory during a staycation.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 43

While the pool at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore did not have super kids-friendly features like water slides, they did have a fountain which the kids enjoyed.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 41

A lot.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 45

There was also a jacuzzi which was heated!

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 42

Landscape Gardens

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 49

Lush greenery and landscape gardens were a key feature of Shangri-La Hotel Singapore.  And really what differentiates them from other hotels in the city.  The curious kids checked out the orchids, the waterfall, the koi etc.

How we spent our staycation

Standard check-in time for our booking was 2pm.  As guests of the Horizon Club rooms, we were allowed to check-in at the exclusive check-in desk inside the Horizon Club Lounge.   So while we were checking in, the kids started helping themselves to the high tea.

After high tea, we went back to the room for the kids to soak in the bath tub before heading back to the lounge for cocktails and canape.

It was raining that day so we couldn’t go swimming in the evening.  So we just bummed in the room and had a good night’s sleep.   The next morning, we started with breakfast at The Line!

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 39

Initially, we had planned to make use of the complimentary shuttle service to visit Orchard Road after breakfast.  However, since we did not get to swim the previous day and the kids wanted to swim so badly, we decided to go for a swim after breakfast.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 44

The kids had a splashing good time till past noon.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 46

We went back to the room, bathed and watched some TV.  At 2pm, we went up to the Horizon Club Lounge for high tea (or more like a late lunch).

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 22

After we had our fill, we went for a stroll around the hotel to, you know, digest all the food we have been eating.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore Review - Family Stays Free Staycation Package 48

After the stroll, we went back to the room where the kids had their naps.  At 5pm, we went to the lounge again for one last round of canape and drinks.

At 6pm, very reluctantly, we checked out and that marked the end of our very memorable staycation!  Thank you Shangri-La Hotel Singapore for the wonderful stay and great memories.

In Summary…

While SGD505++ seems like a premium to pay for a one-night staycation, this is Shangri-La Hotel Singapore we are talking about.  You get a chance to stay in the huge Horizon Club Grand Premiere Room with essentially all your meals thrown in.  And I truly felt that the stay at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore was very different from our usual staycations in the city because of its environment.  The unobstructed view from the room and lush greenery around the hotel grounds allowed us to escape from the noise and crowd and feel very rejuvenated.

The major draw of the promotion imo was the late check-out at 6pm.  I usually find staycations of 1 night a bit short, but with the late check-out, it felt like we were there for 2 days.  Not forgetting we had two rounds of high tea and evening cocktails & canapes!

However, during our stay, we had to reactivate our room key after 12noon.   Because standard check-out time was 12noon, our room cards stopped working. When I went up to the Horizon Club Lounge to enquire, they said that they had to ensure availability of the room before they extended our stay to 6pm.   This got me a little concerned because late check-out was the deal breaker for me.

If you are looking for a unique staycation in Singapore where you will be pampered from check-in till check-out, check out the Family Stays Free promotion before it ends!

Supposed to be a stay-home mom, but hates staying home. Definition of parenting is bringing the boys out for 'experiential learning' in Singapore, Japan and wherever else in the world her husband can afford to pay for.

  1. I liked the fresh orchids too! It’s shangri-la’s corporate flower if I’m not wrong and a signature in all of their hotels 🙂

  2. mmlittlee says:

Lots of food to fill the happy belly! hahah Did you get MahBoh from all the alcohol? I wonder how the Garden Wing looks like. Their room and facilities look a tad old-fashioned though. Need an update soon to keep up with time.

    • bumblebeemum says:

What is mahboh? Drunk? I don’t get drunk so easily.. I have pretty high tolerance for alcohol. Hahaha…

Although the room was old-fashioned, I actually thought it had a certain nostalgic charm to it. Compared to some of the Japanese ryokan that were built in the same era where once I step in, everything looks so old and dated with noticeable cracks and grim. This on the other hand is old school, but yet everything seems new and clean. Like stepping into a time machine.

  3. Shub says:

When vacation may not be possible due to the crunch of time, staycations are shiok! Personally, I will prefer vacations but Shangrila is a reputed brand so might want to give a try.

  4. Jacqualine says:

$505+ is indeed a little steep for one night, for something so extravagant, I would definitely lust over a 2 night stay so that I can try out all the canapes and fully enjoy the facilities! Thanks for sharing though, I’ll definitely keep this in mind when we are looking for a lush getaway, hehe!

  5. Meiling says:

Wow! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun!! LOVE the photography as usual and the welcome kits for the kids. Will definitely have this in mind next time we go on staycation!

  6. Ai Sakura says:

Wow so luxurious and the late check-out is indeed a good draw! I think a one-night staycation is too short most of the time too.. I mean you need to prep and pack so much stuff for the whole family just for one night away for home, sometimes it really is just too troublesome haha

    Ai @ Sakura Haruka

  7. Mary H says:

Lovely pictures! Your staycation sounds like something my family does! And yes, the 6pm late check-out is a big plus point.

  8. I’ve been in a Shangri-La Hotel in China some time ago. It was awesome!

    • bumblebeemum says:

I bet it was! Shangri-La has built up quite a name for itself in less than 50 years. I can’t believe this was THE first Shangri-La hotel and it still looks so glorious like it was just built. Though the architecture was clearly something from the 70s.

  9. MikeTravellingDad says:

    Dear Bumlebee
This was an INCREDIBLE report! I was agonising a bit over which room at the Shangri-La for our vacation in May. I think everybody’s clear in that the Valley Wing is more luxurious, but after your fab write-up I’m convinced the Tower Premium and its massive sq. m. is for us…and our “lovely quiet” 2-yr old! The fact that you ARE allowed into the cocktail happy hour, albeit for an hour, finally swung it!
Thanks so much for the time and effort.
    Mike Oxford

    • bumblebeemum says:

Oh yes, I was extremely happy that kids were allowed for the evening cocktails. I haven’t had much opportunity for an evening cocktail since I had kids! And the best part was that we could pack the canapes back to the room after the one hour is up. Have a great stay at Shangri-La in May! 🙂
