I’m sure most of us with kids are familiar with Dr Seuss. But did you know that he was born in the month of March? Well, I didn’t. Until Timbre @ Gillman introduced their theme for this month’s Social Saturday BBQ.
Saturday Social BBQ is a weekly event happening every Saturday at Timbre @ Gillman where families and friends can get together for an evening of good food, good fun and good entertainment.
Outdoor Play Area
From 4pm on Saturdays, play areas and activities stations will be set up on Saturdays for kids. In their outdoor lawn, there were two bouncy castles free for the kids to jump into.
I thought the boys would jump into one of the bouncy castles once we arrived. But surprisingly, they were more attracted to the basket of bubbles – free for kids to help themselves to!
The boys grabbed a bottle each and huffed and puffed until they used up their bottle.
To ensure that younger toddlers and babies were not left out of the fun, there was an inflatable pool, little tents and a tunnel for them.
There were also balls lying around for kids to kick and chase around.
Since the restaurant and lawn were located in a forested area, please apply mosquito repellent for your kids before you let them play. If you forgot to bring, you can approach the staff to get a complimentary piece of mosquito repellent patch.
We were super unlucky when we were there because not long after we arrived, it started raining! Thankfully, there were activity stations within the restaurant that kept the kids occupied in spite of the rain.
The kids helped themselves to the colouring sheets and markers available.
Okay, so MY was no artist. But he sure seemed happy.
There were also temporary tattoos available. You know the saying ‘teach a man to fish instead of giving him a fish’? I thought of that when the staff patiently showed the kids how to apply the tattoo themselves. After that, the boys just kept going back to get more tattoos until their arms were covered with them.
There was also a face-painting artist and the kids queued up orderly to get their faces or arms painted.
The boys were recently into this whole Mario craze and MY decided to get himself a Mario picture. I thought it was pretty well drawn!
The kids also discovered a table tennis table along the corridor leading to the toilets where MF challenged his cousin to a game of ping pong. Not sure who won, but who cares? As long as they had fun.
Dr Seuss Theme
Every month, Social Saturday BBQ will have a different theme. This month’s theme was Dr Seuss’s birthday.
There were Dr Seuss illustrations hung around the restaurant for decoration. It was like attending a themed party!
Over at the activity corner, there was Dr Seuss craft for kids to participate in. Every week, there will be a different craft work. When we were there, they were teaching the kids to make a pop-up Cat in the Hat.
MY went for the activity and successfully made himself a Cat in the Hat!
This coming Saturday’s craft is going to be Cat in the Hat Perler bead keychain. Looks super awesome!!
Little MY was too young to follow the crafting instructions properly, so he went for the story-telling session instead.
I love the live BBQ concept at Social Saturday BBQs. We could watch our food being prepared before our eyes. The BBQ menu was only available during Social Saturday BBQ.
We ordered 3 BBQ dishes to share. I loved their fish and chicken, but found their lamb too tough.
For more kids-friendly options, we ordered the usual pasta, pizza and fries.
My favourite dish was the crispy pork belly under Tapas. It was so crispy and fragrant!
Water was provided for free. But we ordered juices for the kids anyway. Loved that they bothered to present it nicely with a cherry on top.
There was a live band performing at Timbre @ Gillman. I absolutely LOVED the live band! It created a great atmosphere and the upbeat music could be heard all the way from the bouncy castles. Patrons could also put in song requests. Heard they could do children’s songs too. :p
We had an AMAZING time at Social Saturday BBQ! The kids had tons of fun in spite of the very bad weather while the adults could enjoy live music. I thought the live music differentiated Timbre @ Gillman from other establishments that offered play areas and activities for kids on weekends. It was not just the kids who were having fun. Later in the evening, some of the parents started getting up and dancing along to the music. That was how awesome the whole atmosphere at Timbre @ Gillman was!
Food-wise, there were hits and misses. I would definitely go for the grilled chicken and fish during Social Saturday BBQ, but I would not order the grilled lamb – which was actually the most expensive dish? Chewy lamb aside, I found the rest of the dishes pretty reasonably priced. Juices were a tad expensive but they usually are at establishments where people gather to drink and listen to live music. Anyway water was provided for free so really, no complaints on drink pricing.
Brownie points for having a diaper-changing table at the toilets nearby, though I thought the toilets could have been cleaner.
