It’s not everyday you get to be part of a Guiness World Record feat. Last weekend, we were invited to participate in ‘World Monopoly Day’ by Resorts World Sentosa. Together with not-sure-how-many people, we gathered at Universal Studios Singapore on Saturday morning to set the record for “Most People Playing a Monopoly Game in a Single Venue”!
Before the event, we gave the kids a crash course on Monopoly using Monopoly Junior. So on right? The kids super loved the game and when we told them were going to to USS to play Monopoly, they were so excited!
On the day of the event, we registered and received a ticket to enter the event venue.
We were given a wristband with our seat number. Only children above 8 years old could be official participants, so hubby and I registered and the kids just tagged along. We got assigned to separate tables, so MF followed hubby and MY followed me.
We had to find our seat among the many tables lined along the walkway.
There was a seating plan to help us find our table. Not that we needed it because our table was right at the entrance.
When we settled into our seat, MY checked out this new monopoly that was different from the one at home (Monopoly Junior). He whined a bit about wanting to play his own Monopoly (Junior) but that was against the rule.
For this record, everyone had to be playing the same Monopoly Game – Monopoly Empire. Which I had NO idea how to play before the event. Thankfully the other people at our table knew how to play and taught us the rules.
The player pieces of Monopoly Empire included a Transformer! That kind of pacified MY a little and he decided he wanted to be the Transformer.
We played a warm-up game while waiting for the event to begin. I thought it was hilarious when our Transformer went to jail.
At about 10.30am, we started the event officially. The rule was that every participant had to be seated at their assigned seat and playing the game for 30 minutes straight. We weren’t even allowed toilet breaks! I was a bit worried that MY would get bored or needed to go to the toilet halfway through.
Thank goodness he lasted the full 30 minutes. Credits to the three youngsters at our table who had a stash of smarties in their bags to keep him entertained.
When the time was up, we counted down and cheered to the completion of our mission! On cue, the hip hop street performers came out to put on a show to celebrate!
In the meantime, the Guinness World Record Official gathered with the staff for some serious discussions.
After the performance, the emcee gathered all the participants for a group photo. Let’s play a game of ‘Find Wally’. Can you find MY in the photo below?
Zooming in on the boys to prove that they were somewhere in there.
After everyone was gathered, they rolled out a banner!
And the Mr Monopoly mascot appeared!
And everyone said CHEESE!
After the photo-taking, we had some time to take selfies with Mr Monopoly. But MY was absolutely terrified of the mascot, so we passed.
Coming up next, the certificate presentation ceremony!
And I learnt something interesting. If you are part of a Guinness World Record, you can actually go to the Guiness World Records Online Store to purchase a certificate! We were given an ID and code to purchase the certificate online. But oh well, when I tried keying in the ID and code, the website kept telling me invalid ID.
It’s okay. I have plenty of photos for keepsake. I can do without the certificate.
And before we went off to enjoy the rest of the day at USS, each of us were given two express passes for the rides. I guess it was to make up for the time we spent participating in the event. How thoughtful!
We had an awesome time being part of the “Most People Playing a Monopoly Game in a Single Venue” Guinness World Record (what a mouthful)! I guess that’s one item off my bucket list. (Not that it was there to begin with, but after this experience, I think “Being part of the Guinness World Record” should be part of my bucket list.)
