Johor Bahru (Malaysia) with kids - Taman Mount Austin - Bumble Bee Mum

When planning a family weekend getaway to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, the easiest way to ensure the kids are well-occupied is to book a night at Legoland Hotel and visiting Legoland Malaysia and Water Park.  Or booking a night at Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour and visiting Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town.

However, if you are looking for something less touristy and off the beaten track, with some local eating and shopping thrown in, I recommend spending a weekend at Taman Mount Austin.

Ask anyone who frequents Johor Bahru for shopping and he or she would probably be familiar with Tebrau City.  Taman Mount Austin is located just beside Tebrau.  In recent years, there has a been a lot of new development in Taman Mount Austin, some of which pretty family-friendly.

A Weekend at Taman Mount Austin with Kids

Start your morning at Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park, a family entertainment complex housing a water theme park, adventure course, ice-skating rink, trampoline park and drifting track.

Before it gets too hot, take a dip at the water theme park.  Adults and older children (above 120cm) can spend the morning on the large water slides.

While younger children can play at the splash pool, lazy pool and wave pool.

Depending on how good your kids’ stamina is, you can continue on to the forest adventure, drifting, ice-skating or trampoline park after the water theme park.

However if your kids need their afternoon nap, or simply do not meet the age / height requirements for the activities, you can chill out in the afternoon at one of the many chic cafes in Taman Mount Austin.

If you love an English high tea, head to The Glasshouse Tearoom for a classic 3-tier high tea set.

For some really good cheesecake, try Cafe de Flore.  If you like durian, their durian cheesecake is a must-have.

Check-in to your accommodation to rest till dinner.  For dinner, I recommend Kobo Barbeque Buffet which is located beside Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park, above the very prominent Old Town.

I am not a big meat eater, but I love Kobo BBQ because they had a good range of seafood.

And old-school soft drinks in glass bottles.  <3

The next morning, wake up bright and early for a traditional coffeeshop dim sum breakfast at Restoran Gim Cheng which is a short drive from Austin Heights.

Spend the rest of the morning with a visit to KUSO Trick Art Gallery.

Or challenge yourselves to Mystery Room Escape if escape rooms are your cup of tea.

After checking out from your hotel, go do your shopping, catch a movie, play a game of arcade and grab some groceries at AEON Mall Tebrau City before heading home.

Hotels in Taman Mount Austin

There are currently no big hotels in Taman Mount Austin.  Eventually there will be a hotel resort as part of Austin Heights, but it is still under construction at time of writing.

In the meantime, there are some small boutique hotels in the area.  I recommend The Ardens Hotel if you are looking for a value-for-money boutique hotel in Taman Mount Austin and do not mind having to drive out for dinner.

If you are looking for a hotel near Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park, there are Midori Concept Hotel and Prince 33 Hotel located right beside Austin Heights.  I have not tried either of them though, just saw them when I was in the area.

For somewhere near Cafe de Flore, there is Hotel Shiki along the same row of shops. Again, I haven’t stayed here before but I saw it when I was going to Cafe de Flore. I would love to try their room with Jacuzzi baths one day.

Durian cheesecake? I cannot believe it. How it smells? This definitely looks like a more authentic part of the city (but with interesting places to visit). I want to do the tricks your kids did at the KUSO Gallery!

Ermm… I don’t think you can really smell the durian in the cheesecake (though I’m pretty sure I am less sensitive to durian smell than people from other parts of the world, so maybe you would be able to smell it) but you can definitely taste it. Come to think of it, I have no idea how to describe the smell of durian.

My kids are super good at trick art – much better than me I must say. I think I should do a whole trick art series of all the various trick art galleries we have visited.

  8. My girlfriend just brought her kids to Austin Heights during the March holidays. Looks really fun!
We don’t go to JB often, but when we do, we always end the trip with seafood at Taman Sentosa. Sedap!

    • bumblebeemum says:

I think food is at the top priority for most JB trips.. Lol! Austin Heights is a bit pricey if you go for the water park alone. But if can get a combo pass for the other activities available will be more value-for-money.

  9. And here I thought the only reason to go there is for the Legoland, clearly – I’m mistaken. :p

  10. Mandy says:

Hi may I know is it better to go through checkpoint via tuas or woodlands if we go Austin

  11. Linda says:

Hi, may I know how far is The Ardens from Austin height?
