Lilies. You either love them or you hate them. Last time my husband and I used to work in the same office and one of our colleagues had a lily on her table. My husband said he couldn’t stand the smell. And then someone warned me that lily pollen would stain our clothes. Bwahaha…
THAT is the biggest lily I have ever seen in my life! If you love lilies, check our Lilytopia at Gardens by the Bay @gardensbythebay, on till 10 July! #bbmlocaltourist #gardensbythebay #gardensbythebaysingapore #lilytopia #lily #gardens #flowerphotography #Singapore #singaporetrip #singaporetravel #singaporeinsiders #YourSingapore #travelblog #travelblogger #iamtb #mondayescapes #traveltuesday #wednesdaywanderlust #travelthursday #citytripping #myfavouritetrip #familytravelhq #wanderlust #instatravel #instapassport #traveltheworld #traveladdict
I have nothing against lilies. I love all flowers. I don’t discriminate flowers based on smell or pollen – I love them all the same.
And I made a mini resolution the day I signed up for my Friends of the Garden pass to go for all the seasonal floral displays at the flower dome this year. (Actually, I’m just trying to make sure I made my money worth.)
So there I was, at this year’s Lilytopia. Where more than 50 varieties of lilies were on display at the flower dome.
As with all floral displays of the past, I looked forward to being surprised. To find lilies that defied my understanding of lilies.
What is my understanding of lilies? You may wonder. They are the kind you find in florists? With the mandatory stigma in the middle and the stamen with pollen that will stain your clothes. Yup.
So something like this to me was definitely a lily:
And then I found this which didn’t have the stigma and stamen and pondered if it was a lily. Its bud looked like a lily bud alright. But without the stigma and stamen, this is what I mean by a lily that defies my understanding of a lily. Which is what I love finding at the floral displays at Gardens by the Bay.
And then there were the Calla lilies that look nothing like the lilies I know.
But I love Calla lilies! So much that I chose them for my wedding hand bouquet. Here I am, looking unglam as always even on my wedding day, with my Calla lilies. Yeah yeah, go ahead and laugh. I am glad I made your day.
Back to Lilytopia! The theme for Lilytopia was ‘Retro’.
Lilytopia is one of Garden by the Bay‘s music-themed floral display. So the moment I stepped into the flower dome, I was welcomed by retro music. The first song that came on was ‘These Boots are Made for Walking’.
In line with the retro theme, there were like retro cars within the display.
And a retro scooter and bicycles.
I didn’t care much for the decorations. Nothing could beat Blossom Beats in terms of decorations. I stuck to admiring the lilies.
It wasn’t always about the lilies. I loved how they mixed other flowers into the display to bring out the purity and elegance of the lilies.
One thing I learned from Lilytopia was that there are upward facing lilies, sometimes termed as ‘Stargazers’.
And there are also downward facing lilies. I wonder what’s the term for them. ‘Groundgazers’?
I also learned that while lilies came in all sorts of colours, there are no such thing as blue lilies. I am guessing that is the reason why there was a carpet of these bluish-purplish little flowers?
They provided a nice contrast to the non-blue lilies!
As I walked to the centre of the main display, I found some HUGE lilies!
Okay, maybe you can’t really tell how big they are from my photos. You should go there to see for yourself!
And if I had to pick one favourite lily at Lilytopia, it would be this one that is deep red with white trimmings. It reminds me of Christmas! (Yeah, it’s the second half of the year and hence time to start thinking of Christmas.)
Lilytopia is on at Gardens by the Bay‘s Flower Dome till 10 July 2016. So you still have more than a week to catch it!
But don’t say I didn’t warn you. If you dislike the smell of lilies, you may want to stay away. I could smell the lilies even before I entered the flower dome!
And yup, watch those pollen and don’t let them get on your clothes. :p
