The boys had done many mini rock-climbing at playgrounds like Westgate Wonderland, Marine Cove and eXplorer Kid @ Downtown East. All these mini rock-climbing walls were barely a challenge to MF anymore.
Ever since MF saw Climb Central at Kallang Wave, he has been wanting to go rock-climbing. Not the kiddish playground kind, but the few-times-his-height-and-need-belay kind. However, the requirement to climb at Climb Central was 5 years old (check), 1.1m (check) and 20kg (allllllmost there). I’ve been trying hard to feed MF more to get him to hit that 20kg mark and check him in to Climb Central, but oh well, being the picky eater he was, easier said than done.
When we were visiting HometeamNS Bukit Batok to visit T-Play earlier this year, the boys came across a poster for Clip ‘n Climb – a rock-climbing facility opening at HometeamNS Tampines which looked more kids-friendly than Climb Central. MF immediately said he wanted to go.
After many months of waiting, Clip ‘n Climb finally opened at HometeamNS Tampines earlier this month! Okay, telling you it’s at HometeamNS Tampines is frankly not very helpful. Seriously, I tried searching for HometeamNS Tampines on Google map and it gave me two completely different locations. And no cab drivers seem to know where Hometeam NS Tampines was. You can’t even find ‘Hometeam NS Tampines’ on the Grabtaxi App. So to make your life simpler, I shall just say that it’s at Our Tampines Hub. Yeah… Now you know where it is. Okay, maybe when you are reading this a few months later, this won’t be a problem anymore. But for now, tell the cab driver to bring you to Our Tampines Hub. Clip ‘n Climb is on LEVEL 3.
We weren’t particularly well-prepared for this outing, which ended up with MF going in to climb alone. So I can’t exactly tell you what you can find inside Clip ‘n Climb in the way I usually go into all the nitty gritty details like ‘I saw this thingy and have no idea what it is for – insert photo -‘. Instead, I am going to share with you some important things to note if you want to bring your kids to Clip ‘n Climb:
#1 Minimum age to climb was 4 years old
Okay, it says on Clip ‘n Climb’s website that they are a climbing theme park catered for fun climbers of all ages. I should have known not to take the phrase ‘of all ages’ too literally. Because obviously a baby can’t be climbing.
In all our excitement, I brought the two boys down to Clip ‘n Climb. And was told minimum age to climb was 4. Technically if I round round round off, MY would be 4. But he wasn’t. He was 3++++. However MY was taller and heavier than many 4 year olds – so the staff did say he could climb if he wanted to. But eventually he chickened out and said he didn’t dare to climb. I wasn’t going to pay $25 for him to go in to sit around. So he sat out.
But the point is… Officially the minimum age to climb was 4 years old.
#2 There is probably a minimum weight limit
Now.. They didn’t specifically mention this, but Clip ‘n Climb used an automatic belay system. Which I suspect would require a minimum weight to hold down. Because I’m pretty sure if I hung a feather to the end of that belay, it would fly up rather than come down.
Plus there was the fact that they asked me how heavy the kids were when we were checking in. So if your child is above 4 but rather petite, you may want to call in to check on any minimum weight requirement.
(Update: Ah, okay.. I found out that the minimum weight to climb is 10kg. That’s so much easier to hit than the 20kg requirement at Climb Central.. Woohoo!)
#3 Parents who are not climbing cannot enter
If you are not planning to climb and you’re just bringing your child there to climb, note that you will not be allowed to enter Clip ‘n Climb with your child.
Unless you pay normal admission as a climber, then sure, you can enter and just hang around. But that’s kind of a waste of money.
But wait, who am I to say it’s a waste of money. I’m the kind who pays $35 to enter Kidzania Singapore to hang around. ANYWAY.. Yah, you know what I mean.
#4 You cannot see most of the park from outside
So if you decide not to pay for yourself to go in with your kid, note that the layout of the park is such that you won’t be able to see most of the park from the waiting area outside.
While we were at Clip ‘n Climb, since MY was not climbing, I had to stay outside with him while MF went in to climb on his own. For 60 out of 90 minutes, I was pacing around the waiting area, craning my neck to try to peek in and wondering how my ‘baby’ was doing like an anxious father waiting for the wife to deliver.
#5 Wear proper attire
Not sure about you, but my kids have the habit of throwing on their sandals and dashing out of the house. When visiting Clip ‘n Climb, dress comfortably and be sure to put on proper covered shoes.
#6 Your child needs to be a member to enjoy member rate
HomeTeamNS and SAFRA members can enjoy discounted admission to Clip ‘n Climb. When I was registered MF to go into Clip ‘n Climb, they said that even if I (the parent) was a SAFRA member, MF still had to pay public rate.
But good thing MF was a SAFRA member himself (we signed it up for him so that he could go swimming at the SAFRA near our home), so he got to enjoy the SAFRA member rate for Clip ‘n Climb.
#7 The 10-climbs saver pass cannot be shared
Clip ‘n Climb has a 10-climb saver pass that is significantly cheaper than paying for single admission. However, each saver pass is tied to only one climber. I asked if I could buy a pass and share it among the family, they said no. And the pass had a validity of 6 months.
#8 Your kid may complain of muscle aches at night
Okay, maybe we were too noob and didn’t do any proper stretching before or after climbing. I thought MF – the boy who grew up spending whole days climbing up and down indoor playgrounds – would be totally fit for 90 minutes of rock-climbing. But he lasted all of 80 minutes and decided he was done and at night, he complained of muscle ache. Guess he had a good workout after all!
Now I know where to bring him when I need him to use up all that energy of his.
