Bintan Lagoon Resort - Non-stop Family Fun - Bumble Bee Mum

Usually when I travel, I spend a lot of time doing research on the place I am going to visit.  So when I reach my destination, I roughly know what to expect.  (Of course, in spite of all my research, I still get surprises all the time – which is the fun part of actually traveling versus, well, reading a travel guide).

To start off our year-end holidays this year, we were invited by Bintan Resorts for a quick 3 days 2 nights getaway from Singapore to Bintan.  They planned EVERYTHING for us: accommodation, transport, tours.  So all I did was to pack a bag, grab the kids and go.

I’m not sure if I appeared like a frog in the well when I discovered that the resort we were staying at, Bintan Lagoon Resort, had a private ferry terminal?! And I’m talking about an INTERNATIONAL ferry terminal – complete with immigration.  We could take a ferry from Singapore‘s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal right into the resort!

Arriving at Bintan Lagoon Ferry Terminal

It’s like you hop on the ferry in Singapore, you hop off the ferry in Bintan, you clear immigration and tadah! You are INSIDE THE RESORT already! It’s crazy!

Okay, so I’ve already told you that you can take a direct ferry to Bintan Lagoon Resort from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.  But just to be long-winded as I always am, I’m going to provide you with a bit more information.

Suspension of ferry season during monsoon:

The direct ferry from Singapore to Bintan Lagoon Resort by Mozaic Ferry Lines is suspended during monsoon season (around December to March).  The ferry will resume some time in March, but there is no fixed date because this is subject to weather conditions and approval from authorities.

So during this time, to get to Bintan Lagoon Resorts, you will need to take the ferry, also from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, but to Bandar Bentan Telani Ferry Terminal in Bintan instead.  From there, complimentary shuttle transfers to the resort would be available.

Resort Lobby

Now that we know how to get to Bintan Lagoon Resort, let’s take a walk around the lobby first! I was reminded of the luxurious Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club when we arrived at the spacious lobby of Bintan Lagoon Resort.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 06

And it wasn’t just me who thought they were similar.  The 3 year-old, upon stepping into the lobby, exclaimed, “We came here before!!” And he didn’t believe me when I told him we were in a totally different country.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 05

We received a welcome drink as we were checking in, and there were plenty of seats around the lobby to relax, unwind and soak in the sea view.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 07

There were even shops selling clothes, essential personal care items that you may have forgotten to bring, simple groceries and even diapers!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 08

The boys were also ecstatic to find a ‘Fun House’ along the corridor on the way to our room.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 65

It was just a simple room with a TV screening cartoons, a Lego table and some loose toys that were not exactly very well-maintained.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 68

While some of the toys looked like they were missing parts here and there, some others still looked very new.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 67

Although the picky mum thought the room could do with better upkeeping, the boys insisted on going in every time we walked past the corridor.  Like hellooooo… It’s past 9pm and mummy wants to go back to the room to bath and sleep and they refused to move!

Deluxe Sea-Facing Room

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 54

Once we entered our room, we were greeted by a towel rabbit.  I love towel animals!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 57

We stayed in a Deluxe Sea-Facing Room during our two nights at Bintan Lagoon Resort.  Our room came with a king bed.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 55

They also had rooms with twin beds instead of a king bed.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 64

The deluxe sea facing room came with a sofa area next to the window.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 56

You can sit at the sofa area, chill and look at the beautiful sea!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 58 (3)

An extra bed can also be arranged to be set up at the sofa area.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 58

Our room also had a balcony overlooking the sea.  I super loved the view that greeted us in the morning!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 58 (2)

While I was happy with the decor of the room, I thought the toilet could do with a bit more love.  There was a bath tub, which the boys were more than happy to find, but the bath tub was stained and looked old.   Oh well… The boys didn’t care.  Neither did I.  As long as there was a bath tub to keep the boys happy, I was happy.  But I really felt that they should install shower curtains.  Our toilet floor was all wet by the time everyone in the family had their baths.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 59

Bottled water was provided.  When we checked in, there were two bottles provided.  On the second day, after they made our room, they left three new bottles.  No complaints about the extra bottle of water!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 60

Robes and room slippers were also provided inside the wardrobe, together with safe deposit box, iron and ironing board.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 62

On the whole, the room was very comfortable and spacious with everything we needed.  Except maybe a washer-dryer.  But I know I’m asking too much.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 61

Just for comparison purpose, below is the deluxe room (NOT sea-facing).  The configuration of the room was exactly the same as ours, but there was no sofa next to the window.

Leisure Activity Centre

Right after we checked in, we made a beeline for the Leisure Activity Centre which houses all the fun indoor stuff!

Kids Jungle Gym

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 10

Being the indoor playground junkies that they were, the boys ran STRAIGHT into the Kids Jungle Gym!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 11

Kids Jungle Gym was essentially a full-fledged indoor playground.  Tunnels, obstacles, slides, ball pits… You name it, they’ve got it!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 13

There was even a mini rock-climbing wall!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 12

And a dedicated toddler section!!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 14

And an air blaster zone!!! Which very anti-climatically wasn’t working when we were there.  Zzzz….

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 15

Despite the air blasters not working ,there was plenty of space and obstacles for the boys to run around and keep themselves entertained for hours.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 16

Needless to say, the jungle gym was the boys’ favourite spot in the resort.  During our stay, they kept going, “I want to go jungle gym!” My only gripe was that the jungle gym closed at 9pm – which was too early for my boys.  Hah!  But it’s okay, they went to the Fun House after the jungle gym closed and continued playing.  What did I say about NON-STOP fun?

And while the kids are playing in the jungle gym, there was a Power Gym right next door for adults.

Batik Art

There was an area where guests could do batik painting for a fee.

Free Leisure Activities

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 20

Around the foyer of the Leisure Activity Centre, there were tables for guests to play table tennis, pool, air hockey, table soccer and carrom.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 21

To play these games, you need to approach the main desk to sign out for the equipment.  After playing, do return the equipment for other guests to use.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 23

While I loved the variety of the games, the tables were clearly very old.  Would be nice if they replaced the tables with new ones.

Kids Club

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 27

Besides the jungle gym, Bintan Lagoon Resort also had a Kids Club.  I think some guests confuse the jungle gym for the Kids Club.  They are actually two separate facilities.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 29

The Kids Club here was similar in concept to the ones we saw at Marriott Vacation Clubs in Phuket.  Though not exactly on par in terms of execution.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 34

Just like at MVC, you can drop off your kids who are age 4 and above at the Kids Club.  They can either help themselves to the toys available, or you can pay for them to participate in the supervised activities.  The activities cost IDR 54,000 per activity, or IDR 150,000 for the entire day’s activity.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 28

If you do not wish to pay for the above activities, your kids can just play with the games and toys available.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 36

There were toys suitable for babies and toddlers.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 33

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 32

While older children can play board games.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 40

At the far end of the room, there were two little corners with some rather old furnishing and toys that the boys didn’t take any interest in.  I thought the corners could do with a total revamp.  Actually, I think the whole Kids Club could do with a total revamp.  But the two corners particularly looked so run-down that even the kids didn’t want to go in.

While the mum was busy nit-picking, the boys were satisfied playing outside with all the toys available.

Amusement Centre

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 26

As if the kids didn’t have enough things to play with the jungle gym and Kids Club.  In the foyer, there were also electronic cars and animal rides that kids could take for a spin! They cost about IDR 100,000 for 30 minutes.

Swimming Pools

There were two swimming pools at Bintan Lagoon Resorts – a main pool for adults and a kids pool.

Main Pool

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 42

The main pool was located near the lobby and facing the sea.  It was cleverly located FAAARRR away from the kids pool, so you can come here if you want a peaceful swim.

Kids Pool

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 45

We didn’t use the main pool at all, because the kids pool was, well, better for the kids.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 49

The kids pool was located just beside the Leisure Activity Centre.  There were two slides.  The bigger slide was under maintenance when we were there, so the kids only tried the smaller one.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 46

The slide wasn’t very slippery, so rather than sliding into the pool, MF ended up sliding till the end and jumping into the pool.. LOL!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 47

What I found most interesting were the boats that we could rent for the kids to paddle around the pool.  It cost about IDR100,000 for one hour rental.  To rent the boat, you need to look for the staff at the Amusement Centre.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 53

Other than the boats, you could also rent floats.  The rental cost for the floats was:

  • Small float = IDR49,000 for 2 hours
  • Big single float = IDR78,400 for 2 hours
  • Double float = IDR98,000 for 1 hour

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 52

Around the pool, there were chairs, swings and hammocks to chill on.

Other Activities

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 69

Bintan Lagoon Resort had its own beach and there were several water sports available. However, it was raining a lot when we were there, so we didn’t get to try any of them. We didn’t even touch the sand during our stay there because of the rain! *groan*

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 73

There was also an observation deck where you could climb up to catch the sun set.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 71

While it was possible to walk around the various facilities in the resort, when it was raining, we used the buggy to get to the Leisure Activity Centre because the walkway was not sheltered.

Dining

In Summary…

Bintan Lagoon Resort had a lot to offer in terms of the range of activities and facilities.  As the title of this post says, we had NON-STOP fun while we were there.  And we didn’t even get to the beach activities!

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 48

However, it was clear that the resort was past its days of glory.  Some of the facilities were nice, like the Jungle Gym and Power Gym.  But many other facilities (like the rest of the Leisure Activity Centre) looked rather tired and in need of renovation.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 43

As we moved around the resort, I had a feeling that they were slowly upgrading their facilities.  Because there were parts of the resort that made us go “Wow, nice!” like the new restaurant Chop Chop which was beautifully renovated.  But there were just as many parts of the resort that made us go, “Hmmm… This looks desperately in need of renovation.” like the Kids Club and Fun House.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Dining Options 03

I felt that Bintan Lagoon Resort had so much potential. In terms of accessibility from Singapore, they are rather unbeatable with their private ferry terminal.  Around the rest of Bintan Resorts, they have some great tours like EcoVillage tour and Bintan Mangrove tour.  With some much-needed renovation, it could be the ultimate hassle-free getaway from Singapore.

Bintan Lagoon Resort Blog Review - Getaway from Singapore 02

For me to be convinced to make this a regular getaway for our family, they just need to revamp their Kids Club and Fun House.  And replace all those rusty and old table soccer / air hockey tables.  If their Kids Club was anything like the one at Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club, at the current price point, this resort would be a winner for Singaporean families looking for a reasonably priced and convenient getaway.
