Experience a different Pattaya at Sea Sand Sun Resort - Bumble Bee Mum

During our trip to Pattaya with kids, we spent 3 nights at Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya.  Before the trip, I wasn’t sure how much the kids would enjoy the stay there.

3 months before this Pattaya trip, we were on another beach holiday in Phuket where the kids were spoiled rotten by the Kids Clubs of Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club and Marriott’s Mai Khao Beach.  And a few weeks before, we were in Bintan (Indonesia) for ANOTHER beach holiday, where the kids were entertained by the numerous family activities at Bintan Lagoon Resort.

So prior to our arrival, I wondered if the kids would be bored during our stay at Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya – which didn’t have a kids club, play gym nor kids pool etc.

In the end, our 3 nights stay at Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya was far from boring for the boys.  They had an almost empty beach all to themselves.

They had a standalone villa, where they was more than enough space for them to run around in circles without having to worry that they were disturbing the guests downstairs or on the other side of the wall.

And they had a buggy-on-call, complete with a friendly driver! The boys have always loved riding buggies around resorts since their first encounter with buggies at Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson.  After 3 days here, they became good friends with the staff who shuttled us around in the buggy during our stay at Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya.

After we left Pattaya and went around to other parts of Thailand, the boys continued chanting ‘Sea Sand Sun’ and saying they wanted to go back to ‘Sea Sand Sun’.  That’s how much they enjoyed the resort.

Location

In the photo below, see those tall building in the background? That’s central Pattaya.  Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya was located in the outskirts, about 30 minutes drive South from central Pattaya.

Being out of town can be both an advantage or disadvantage.  It really depends on what kind of holiday you are looking for.  If you are the kind of who enjoys being in the hub where you can walk out of your hotel and immediately be surrounded by shopping and dining, then Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya may not be the place for you.

Do you want to be in the heart of the city, surrounded by food and dining? If yes, you may want to consider staying in Pattaya city centre instead.

But if you are looking for a relaxing getaway.  Where you hear nothing but crickets and frogs (or toads – can’t tell the difference) at night, and birds chirping in the trees in the morning.  Where when you walk around the resort, you see more flowers and butterflies than people.

And when you step on the beach, it’s just the sand and sea and there’s not a single tout or tour boat in sight.  Then you should consider staying at Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya.

Although far from the city centre, Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya was located close to attractions that are great for families, like Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark (5 min drive), Nong Nooch Tropical Garden (10 min drive) and Swiss Sheep Farm Pattaya (10 min drive).

And below is a map of these locations with respect to Pattaya city centre.

Of course, there are also attractions that are nearer to Pattaya city centre, such as Art in Paradise Pattaya and Harbor Pattaya.  And staying at Sea Sand Sun would be less convenient for visiting these places.

But these days it seems that tourists are heading more towards attractions away from the city centre, as revealed by TripAdvisor’s Top 15 Trending Attractions in Southeast Asia in Sept-Oct 2016, where Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and Cartoon Network Amazone came in 5th and 8th respectively.   Which puts Sea Sand Sun in an ideal location for travellers!

Accommodation Types

Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas had different accommodation types, depending on your needs, but all of which are generously sized.  Their rooms are 55 sqm while their villas range from 120 sqm to 200 sqm.

We stayed in a Pool Villa Suite, which was a standalone villa featuring a lovely private entrance and our own outdoor pool.

The villa was equipped with amenities such as minibar, personal safe, tea and coffee making facilities.

There was a king-size bed and an extra bed could be arranged within the villa for the kids.   Okay, sorry I have no photo to show you because, as I explained in my post on Cartoon Network Amazone, my hard disk died on me, wiping out a lot of my photos from this trip.  But you can hop over to Sea Sand Sun’s website for a 360 view of the villa.  Our villa looked exactly like in the website.

Needless to say, the moment we checked in, the kids dashed out to check out our private outdoor pool and planted themselves on the sun lounge.

From the pool, there was a side entrance that led right into the bathroom.  Very thoughtfully designed, as it ensured that the rest of the villa didn’t get wet from kids-right-out-of-pool going through the villa to get to the bathroom. The bathroom had separate rain shower and bath tub.

Ample towels and toiletries were provided.

Dining

There was one restaurant within the resort, which was conveniently located between the swimming pool and the beach.

The alfresco dining area by the beach was the perfect spot for having a drink while catching the sunset.

In the morning, buffet-style breakfast was served at the restaurant.

There was the (in my opinion mandatory) live-cooking station for eggs.

And we could also request for freshly-squeezed juice.

On one of the three mornings we were there, the breakfast was semi-buffet style.   On that morning, the buffet spread was smaller, but we could order items like pad thai and pad see-ew from the ala-carte menu.

The kids looked forward to their daily dose of danish pastries and hot chocolate each morning!

And they would quickly gobble down their breakfast so that they could spend more time on the beach before we went out for our sightseeing.  It was great that the restaurant overlooked the beach, because I could continue enjoying my breakfast while watching over them.

If you prefer, you could also call for room service to dine in your room or villa.  We actually did that for our dinners because the kids tended to fall asleep on our way back to the resort after sightseeing, so we would let them continue sleeping while we ate our dinners in the villa.

Just to give you a gauge of food pricing here, below were the prices of some of the food items from the room service menu:

  • Chicken Masaman Curry (THB 290++)
  • Pad Thai (THB 450++)
  • Carbonara / Bolognese Pasta (THB 350++)
  • Hawaiian Pizza (THB 450++)

Of the food we ordered, there were hits (the chicken masaman curry came with 3 juicy drumsticks, the pizza was a lot bigger than we expected – that alone could have fed our whole family) and misses (the green curry came with a few pathetic slices of dry chicken).

Facilities

Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya had its own uncrowded private beach.   It’s the first time I went to a beach where there were more bird tracks than human footprints every morning.

Sea Sand Sun Resort Villas Pattaya - Family Friendly Resort in Pattaya Review 02

You could get a Thai traditional massage by the beach.

Below the restaurant, there was a fitness room and a pool table.

And there was a swimming pool that looked out to the sea.

In Summary…

Pattaya is a very, well, interesting city.  As Darren from Pattaya Unlimited explains, it is a ‘city of two halves‘.

Sea Sand Sun Resort Villas Pattaya - Family Friendly Resort in Pattaya Review 31

This being our first visit to Pattaya, Sea Sand Sun Resort gave us a very positive impression of the city, leaving us almost oblivious to ‘the other half’ of Pattaya.

Sea Sand Sun Resort Villas Pattaya - Family Friendly Resort in Pattaya Review 34

On the whole, I felt that staying here was akin to staying at Mai Khao Beach rather than Patong in Phuket.  You may feel like you are missing out on the more ‘happening’ part of the city.  But in return you feel more rejuvenated and stress-free.  There is no better or worse.  It’s just totally different experiences.

Sea Sand Sun Resort Villas Pattaya - Family Friendly Resort in Pattaya Review 17

If you are visiting Pattaya and prefer not to stay within the city, then Sea Sand Sun Resort & Villas Pattaya is definitely a great escape from the crowd.

  3. This sounds so relaxing – I’m not sure I’d get my daughter off the beach/out of the pool. Amazing to have it almost to yourself in Thailand as well. I have to say I’ve heard mixed things about Pattaya but this is really tempting. Thanks for linking up with #citytripping

Yeah, Pattaya has a pretty mixed reputation, it really depends on where you end up in Pattaya. I’m glad I didn’t follow conventional travel guides to visit the walking street and main beach instead, otherwise I would have left Pattaya with a very different impression of the city.

Haha.. The crickets and frogs.. My kids were trying to find them, because I think it didn’t make sense to them to be able to hear them but not see them? But we never saw them.

  5. I could easily spend some time in that gorgeous villa and on its private beach! Looks great. I have to admit I didn’t realise how big and built-up the centre of Pattaya was. Think I’d take the retreat away from the city. #citytripping

It looks like they are really developing Pattaya. When I was there, we visited Habour Pattaya which was a new entertainment complex. And not far away, they were building another huge mall. I would love to be back in Pattaya again in a few years time to see how it has changed.

Oh my! This place is gorgeous! I wouldn’t mind to be a bit away from the city center since it seems like everything needed is in the resort. I love Thailand and would like to go back (I was talking about the country with a coworkers today). #citytripping
