Imagine Native - Creative Fest for Kids at S.E.A. Aquarium, Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore - Bumble Bee Mum

S.E.A. Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa always seem to have a way of surprising me. Every now and then, they throw in some seasonal event, like Sea Monsters and Spooky Seas which we visited last year.

SEA Aquarium 2016 Events

But seriously. The LAST thing I would expect S.E.A. Aquarium to throw at me is a BOOK FAIR.  When I received an invitation to attend the opening of Imagine | Native on Friday, I was thinking, “Huh, what? Why would I want to go to S.E.A. Aquarium to visit a book fair??”

Curiosity got the better of me and I decided, let’s go see how Imagine-native this event is.

SEA Aquarium Imagine Native 2016 Blog Review 01

The first thing that caught me by surprise about Imagine | Native was the need for a separate admission ticket (on top of of S.E.A. Aquarium admission) to enter the event.  The ticket cost $6 per adult / $3 per child.  I was thinking to myself, “Why on earth would anyone pay to enter a book fair???”  But I found out that:

  • The $6 admission for adult comes with a $5 Imagine | Native voucher
  • The $3 admission for child comes with a goodie bag

Okay, I didn’t get the voucher nor goodie bag because I was there on a media invitation.  But so happens I ran into a friend and he showed me the contents of the goodie bag he received.  Which I thought was not too bad.  I could do with a S.E.A. Aquarium water bottle for $3!

As for the voucher, there has to be something to buy right? So I browsed around the booths and found many interesting books.  There were several books that were unique to Singapore.

SEA Aquarium Imagine Native 2016 Blog Review 05

There were even storybooks about the S.E.A. Aquarium! If I was a tourist, I would buy these.

And if you didn’t feel like spending much more than $5, I found some activity books that cost $2.05 each.

SEA Aquarium Imagine Native 2016 Blog Review 36

And $2.05 was before discount.  At the book fair, everything was going at 15% discount.

So yeah.. I went home with a few books.  Resorts World Sentosa should keep inviting me for their events.  I just cannot resist going home with some souvenirs whenever I’m there.  The last time they invited me to Universal Studios Singapore, I went home with a souvenir water bottle.  And another time, I went home with a bubble gun.  This time round, on top of two activity books, I also ended up buying Edmund Chen’s ‘My Little Red Dot’ ($17.90 before discount).

SEA Aquarium Imagine Native 2016 Blog Review 22

Yes, Edmund Chen as in 陈之财.  The actor-turned-illustrator who never ages. If you are my age or older and grew up in Singapore, you would definitely know who he is.  He was there to do a reading of ‘My Little Red Dot’. MY loved it so much that I ended up buying the book for him to play with (Yes, it’s a playing book, not a reading book).  I will share with you more about the book… when I have the time (90% of the time when I say this, it doesn’t happen, so don’t hold your breath).

Check it out, I even got his autograph!

And so I digressed (as usual).  Back to Imagine | Native! Among the book fair, there was also a lucky draw booth.

The grand prize was awesome – a night at the Ocean Suite!!

And next to it, there were some fun facts about Manta Rays.

And a colouring booth for kids to colour hand-shaped fishes.

After colouring your fish, you could stick it on the board.

Moving on, enter the exhibit hall and you can find a mini touch pool.

SEA Aquarium Imagine Native 2016 Blog Review 14

It was a bit too tall for kids though – I had to carry MY up for him to reach in to touch the sea cucumber and sea stars.

There were another two small tanks of sea creatures – including MY’s favourite ‘Nemo’.

And more colouring activities!

Kids could choose to colour a shark, squid or fish.

And when they were done, they would be instructed to stick it to the ocean food chain.

This exhibition hall was also where story-telling sessions and autograph sessions were held.  You need to check RWS website for the schedule.  The schedule changes everyday!

While we were there, we caught the reading of ‘Afternoon Tea at Raffles Hotel’.  After the reading, the author gave out customised stickers and pencils.

And there was also a crafting activity where children could make the bird from the story.

The story and activities change everyday so do check the schedule for activities to be held each day.

There was also a stage where three stage performances were held.

Fin-Tastic Fishy Friends was a song and dance performance where kids were asked to dance along.

Deep Sea Oracle was an educational ‘talk’ where they introduced children to sea cucumber, horseshoe crab and sea star while highlighting little things they can do to protect the environment.

Neptune’s Legend was a story-telling session.

There were also meet and greet sessions.  Again, check the schedule for meet and greet sessions.

Last but not least, also on display was a gigantic shelf of about 8000 books.  These books were part of the 10,000 books donated by the public and RWS’s team members in a book donation drive jointly organised by Resorts World Sentosa and People’s Association to be distributed to children from low income families across Singapore.

S.E.A.A. Super Mum

While Imagine | Native was taking place at the foyer near the exit, within the main aquarium, we also participated in the S.E.A.A. Super Mum activity.  Pick up the activity sheet on your way in and there are some questions for the children to answer.

SEA Aquarium SEAA Super Mum 08

Throughout the aquarium, they would have to look for these boards to help them answer the questions.

And at the Ocean Dome, there was a crafting section.

The kids could choose to either make a crown.

Or a baby cichlid.

You can choose to bring your cichlid home, or put it into the mummy cichlid’s mouth. Because cichlids protect their babies by keeping them in their mouths!
