Have you been to the new wing at Marina Square? The wing where Pororo Park Singapore is – facing Esplanade and The Float? If you have, you would probably have noticed Emporium Shokuhin, the happening new Japanese mega mart on the first floor.
Just last holidays alone, I was there 3 times! Partly because you know how much I love Japan and Japanese stuff.
Emporium Shokuhin Live Seafood
The live seafood section is the closest thing we have in Singapore to a Japanese market. Okay, it’s not anything close, but it’s better than nothing. We can go there when we miss watching live king crabs swimming around.
I haven’t bought anything from the live seafood section before. Usually we’re just there for the kids to check out the live crabs and fishes. I am a lot more interested in checking out the grocer!
Emproium Shokuhin Gourmet Grocer
The kids have been to Japan often enough to recognize many of the stuff available at the Japanese grocer. Like their favourite strawberry milk from Hokkaido.
Or Calpis drinks, which they have grown to love after one of the buffet we had in Japan had a free flow of this stuff. The kids mistook it as milk then. They realised it wasn’t milk the moment they drank it, but decided they liked it nevertheless.
Japanese fruits! I love Japanese melons, but $58 was too much for me to pay for one. I remind myself to eat more of them when I’m in Japan.
At the end of the grocer, you will find the real reason I have been hanging out here.
Free play area
It was not the most exciting of play areas. But it was FREE and AIR-CONDITIONED. So no complaints. There were some baskets for kids to throw balls into.
Some boards for kids to doodle on.
And train tracks. Which is really all I needed to keep the boys occupied for short break.
There was also a TV screening Japanese anime within the play area.
The next thing I do when I spot a play area like this is to find a nearby cafe to grab a drink while the kids play.
Kohi Koji Cafe & Bakery
Right next to the play area, you will find a bakery cafe called Kohi Koji. If you pick a table near the play area, you can get a partial view of the play area. But note that you will not be able to see the entrance / exit and your kids may run out without you noticing.
I found their cakes and drinks nothing to wow about. Pretty average stuff. But oh well, when I find a cafe with a play area nearby, taste is usually not my priority.
They do have plain water that you can help yourself to. So if I’m feeling stingy, I would just give their drinks a miss. Coz like I said, it was pretty average. But usually I need the caffeine, hence the drinks.
Just to make sure that this place is totally family-friendly, there was a nursing room inside the supermarket, not too far from the play area. Follow the following sign down the corridor:
It was always occupied when I was there, so I haven’t been able to take a photo of the interior. But just so you know the nursing room here is extremely popular. :p If it’s occupied, there are other nursing rooms at Marina Square.
The free play area and nursing room were nice touches to Emporium Shokuhin that I wasn’t expecting to find. This has made Marina Square even more family-friendly than it already was, with the existing free indoor play area and Pororo Park Singapore.
I haven’t tried all the restaurants at Emporium Shokuhin as they look kind of pricey. I have tried the yakiniku restaurant and it was really good, albeit pricey. Hubby and I both agreed that it tasted like yakiniku we had in Japan. In that is anything to go by, I would give the other restaurants a try some day. See if they have the taste of Japan. :p

This is what I’m doing when I’m supposed to be doing a 5km run. Because my race pack is late. @so.natty Oh I almost missed out an important point. There’s a kids play area just beside the cafe. #AWESOME #bumblebeemumeats #bumblebeemumplays #kohikoji #emporiumshokuhin #marinasquare #singaporefood #sgfood #sgfoodies #eatoutsg #hungrygowhere #burpple #instafoodsg #choucream #singaporecafe #sgcafe #sgcafehopping #sgparentblogger #sgparentbloggers #sgmombloggers #sgmumbloggers
