When you think of a Hello Kitty themed cafe in Japan, you probably imagine one in a city like Tokyo or Osaka. But oh well, Japanese are never known to be conventional. Nestled in a small onsen town, Shima Onsen, in the Gunma Prefecture is Cafe Floresta – A Hello Kitty themed cafe.
Cafe Floresta is located in the lobby of Shima Grand Hotel. It is no coincidence that Shima Grand Hotel is also the location of Japan’s first Hello Kitty themed onsen.
You do not need to be a guest of Shima Grand Hotel to visit Cafe Floresta. Cafe Floresta has two entrances, one of which faces outside the hotel.
The other entrance is at the lobby of the hotel.
Regardless of which way you enter Cafe Floresta by, you will soon find yourself by Hello Kitty cuteness!
You can check out the menu at the entrance. The themed food look so enticing! I super LOVE themed food.
We had booked a stay package at Shima Grand Hotel which came with 2 x 500 yen Cafe Floresta vouchers.
Our initial plan was pretty straightfoward. We would check-in at 3pm to visit Cafe Floresta, soak in the Hello Kitty Onsen, have dinner buffet and Zzzz after that. Next day we would have our buffet breakfast and check-out.
But you know Murphy’s Law. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. The more perfect your plan sounds, the more likely things will go awry. With a more-difficult-than-expected hike to see snow monkeys at Jigokudani and road closure in winter, we eventually arrived at Shima Grand Hotel in the evening and Cafe Floresta was closed by then.
So we ended up going to Cafe Floresta AFTER we had the hotel’s buffet breakfast the next day.
Just to waste time and allow our breakfast to digest, we took our time to order our food and go around the cafe taking photos.
I love the gorgeous Hello Kitty posters around the cafe!
Even the pillars were not spared.
The boys with their super sharp eyes for sounvenir stamps spotted one!
The friendly staff dished out a stack of postcards for the boys to stamp on.
Eventually the food arrived. We ordered confectionery that was as light as possible.
In case you are wondering how why I consider pancakes ‘light’, you should see what else was on their menu.
Yup. Pasta, soba, udon… So yes, I think those pancakes were pretty light. But I wish I had been here for lunch instead! Those Hello Kitty onigiri were SO KAWAII!
