When driving in Japan, can I set the GPS to avoid tollways?
In my Japan Travel Blog, I get this question very often. In short, the answer is YES. But I only know how to do it on a Japanese language GPS. The ONE occasion I used an English-language GPS, I couldn’t find the option to do so.
So anyway, here is a quick guide on how to use a Japanese GPS, and setting it to avoid tollways when doing a self-drive trip in Japan.
1. Enter your destination.
Choose 目的地 (destination) to begin entering your destination.
2. Choose Method of Input
For foreign travelers, the most common methods of input are telephone numbers or map codes.
To input using telephone number, choose 電話番号 (telephone number).
To input using Map Code, choose マップコード (Map Code). >Click here to read about how to search for Map Codes of your destination.< Very often, Map Code is at the bottom of the list. So if you don’t see it, see the scroll bar on the right? Scroll down to find the Map Code option.
3. Key in the Telephone Number / Map Code
You will come to screen with a keypad to enter the telephone number / Map Code. After you are done keying in, press 検索 (search).
For telephone numbers, if they have more than one search result in their database that matches, a list will be displayed. Select your destination from the list.
If there is only one match, it will bring you directly to the map. Similarly for map codes, once you enter the map code and press 検索, you will be brought to the map.
When you have verified that the + is on the destination you want to go, press ここに行く (Go Here).
4. Display Alternative Routes
The map will show you a recommended route. Just below the map, you will find information such as distance, toll fees and time required (from top to bottom).
You can get the GPS to display alternative routes by pressing ５ルート表示 (Show 5 routes).
5 routes will be highlighted, based on ‘Standard Route’, ‘Shortest Distance’, ‘Use Main Roads’, ‘Avoid Tolls’ and ‘Other Route’. If want to avoid tolls, press 有料回避 (Avoid Tolls).
5. Let’s Go!
After you have chosen the option you want, it will bring you back to the map. Press 案内開始 and start driving! 🙂
Hope this guide has been helpful. Drive safe and have a great trip!
