Singapore Jurong Bird Park - Lunch with Parrots - Bumble Bee Mum

Previously, I blogged about our Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife where the boys had a ball monkeying around with Orangutans over breakfast at Singapore Zoo.  Because it was so fun, I decided I had to do the equivalence at Jurong Bird Park – Lunch with Parrots.

Mabel (AmazinglyStill.com) and I saw the poster for Lunch with Parrots on our previous visit to the bird park to feed the lories.  During that visit, I was rushing for time, so we decided we have to come for this on our subsequent bird park visit.  With MF turning 6 at the end of the year, there was not much time left to procrastinate since kids below 6 could dine for free.

The buffet lunch cost $25 per adult / $20 per child (above 6).  As a Friends of Wildlife member, there was a discount and I only had to pay $20 for myself.  My Friends of Wildlife membership was turning out to be much more value-for-money than I expected!

The food selection was rather simple Chinese fare.  There was food like chap chye and steamed egg which kids could eat.  And the fried fish was also suitable for kids.

Our favourite dish was the chicken wings which were slightly spicy.  But my boys have been trained to take food that is a little spicy so they ate like two chicken wings each.

And there was kung pow prawns which was supposed to be spicy since there was so much dried chili inside, but to me it was not spicy at all.  But you can’t trust me when it comes to judging if a food is spicy or not because I have pretty high tolerance for spicy food.  Anyway my boys ate it as well with no complaints that it was spicy.  :p

There was also a live cooking station serving Singapore Laksa.

A small selection of fruits and desserts (and even ice-cream which I forgot to take photo of!!) was also included.

Drinks wise, there was coffee, tea and orange cordial.  I didn’t try their coffee and tea but their orange cordial was super diluted.  But it’s okay, they can just serve me water for me to quench my thirst and I would be happy. At least they didn’t force me to pay extra for drinks like some buffets do.

While the food was super yummy or anything, I was fine with the selection since our main purpose of eating here was not for the food but for the parrots.

Lunch with Parrots was held at the Songbird Terrace from 12.30pm to 2pm.  The parrots appeared from 1 to 1.30pm.  We arrived at 12.30pm sharp to chope (chope = reserve in Singlish) a seat right in front of the stage.

At 1pm sharp, the staff started bringing the parrots out and the excited kids ran over to get a closer look at them.

The show started with an introduction to the parrots, which the staff brought right to our table for us to admire.

The parrots performed some stunts to show off their flexibility.

Their intelligence.

Their creativity.

And even helped to promote recycling!

Too short to reach the recycling bin? No problem! The parrot grabbed a stool to perch itself up.

Yeah, that’s right.  You kids have no excuses not to recycle. If a parrot can do it, so can you.

During parts of the show, they asked for volunteers and Mabel’s boy was chosen!

There were many opportunities to volunteer in the show, and the chances of being chosen at the Lunch with Parrots show was higher than at the other shows in the park – simply because there are less people at the Lunch with Parrots show as you need to be a paying diner to catch the show.

To increase your chances of being chosen, I recommend going on a non-school holiday weekday.  Better still if it’s exam period.  When we were there during exam period, there were only like what.. 5 tables of patrons? So you can imagine your chances of being picked would be pretty high!

At the end of the show, there was an opportunity to take a photo with the parrot for a SGD10 donation to the Wildlife Conservation Fund and you get to go home with a painting done by the parrot, Pikasso!

On the whole, I thought the lunch with parrots was SUPER value-for-money.  The food wasn’t great, but we were paying more for the exclusive opportunity to get up close with the parrots.

Just beside the Songbird Terrace, there was even a playground where the boys ran off to play before and after the show, while I slowly had my lunch.

Tips for Visiting Lunch with Parrots:

  1. Be there at 12.30pm sharp to get a table as close to the stage as possible.
  2. Try to go on a non-holiday weekday where it is less crowded and you have a higher chance to participate in the show.
  3. When they ask for volunteers, don’t be afraid to stick you hand right up quickly and look super enthusiastic!
  4. Hang around after the show.  If you’re lucky (like us), you may get a chance for round 2 of the show if they happen to have a rehearsal.  When we were there, we watched the show TWICE, the second time being a rehearsal for I think a new staff member.  And we also got to see the parrot practicing some new tricks that wasn’t ready for the show yet.
  5. Always have an adult at the table watching the food.  There were many mynas around picking on the food at the table the moment the food was left unattended. These are not the birds you want to have lunch with, but unfortunately they are there.
