In less than 3 months, we will be celebrating Singapore’s 52nd birthday! This year, Bumble Bee Mum is honoured to be one of the media partners for NDP 2017. In collaboration with the organising committee of NDP 2017, we will be sharing updates of what to expect in this year’s National Day celebrations on our blog over the next 2+ months, so stayed tuned!
Theme for NDP 2017
The theme for this year’s NDP is #OneNationTogether – complete with the hash. It is the first time the hash symbol (#) has been incorporated into an NDP theme. Besides it’s link to hashtags on social media, the “#” also serves as symbols of unity and home.
Take a look at our nation’s first $10 note launched in 1967. The four interlocking arms represent our nation’s strength in social unity and multicultural harmony. Do you realise that it resembles the # symbol?
Also, # is a familiar feature in Singaporean home addresses, hence, this makes “#” synonymous with the idea of home.
Highlights of NDP 2017
NDP 2017 marks the return of NDP to The Float @ Marina Bay after a two-year hiatus. There will be four key segments:
1) Pre-Parade Segment
Spectators will be engaged through sing-alongs of familiar Singapore/NDP songs, interactive activities, and will also witness the Red Lions’ parachuting performance.
2) Dynamic Defence Display (D3)
The D3 showcases Singapore’s continued readiness to defend itself against a spectrum of security threats. This year, the D3 will be organised into two segments. The first segment (preceding the Parade & Ceremony) focuses on the military capabilities of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to defend our sovereignty. The second segment (after the Parade & Ceremony) focuses on the importance of the SAF and the Home Team working together with all Singaporeans to tackle the rising threats of cyber-attacks and terrorism.
3) Parade and Ceremony
Singaporeans can also look forward to traditional celebratory elements such as a military tattoo performance, the Presidential Gun Salute on the M3G military raft, as well as the State Flag Flypast and the Salute to the Nation performed by the Republic of Singapore Air Force. This year’s parade will also feature a special tribute to 50 years of National Service.
This year’s show will be organised into six acts. The first five acts will celebrate our uniquely Singaporean achievements in building:
- A sustainable living environment
- Forward-looking economy
- Strong families and communities
- Vibrant multi-racial culture
- An innovative society
The final act will see audience standing together as one people during the nation anthem singing and pledge moment, where we will look towards the future with confidence as One Nation Together.
This year’s theme song is titled “Because It’s Singapore!”. The song conjures up images of the community spirit and hard work that our forefathers went through in building our home. The song also highlights the harmonious lifestyle that is uniquely Singapore, where people of different races and religions live together, celebrate our diversity and share our customs and cultures.
Most importantly, the song recognises that Singaporeans need to collectively decide our future and stay as One Nation Together to overcome all challenges and fulfil our dreams of tomorrow.
“Because It’s Singapore!” is jointly produced by Jay Lim (singer and lyricist of the theme song) and Lee Wei Song (composer of the theme song).
NDP 2017 Theme Song Lyrics
Title: Because It’s Singapore
Music and Lyrics by Jay Lim
Step by Step
Together we’ll build our dreams
Heart to heart
Together we’ll stay as one nation, undivided
Back to back
Together we’ll brave the heat, the cold, the storms
Hand in hand
Together we’ll grow this land that we call home
Nothing in this world compares
It’s our Singaporean Life
Everyone is family, friend and neighbour
Living in harmony
Nothing in this world compares
To this island where it’s home
Where we love and know we’ll never be alone
Because it’s Singapore (Just Believe)
This is Singapore (We Can Be)
Our Singapore (The world will see)
We are Singapore
