Getting around Hokkaido in November (family of 7)

Hi BBM

love your blog…gave me lots of information to prepare for my trip…thanks so much for the detailed information and sharing.

However I’m still stuck whether to drive or rail.
Is our 1st time to Hokkaido..going end Nov.
Pack of 7 consist of 3 kids (11,14,16) + my parents.

Plan my itinerary:
2N Hakodate
1N Noburibetsu
1N Otaru
3N Sapporo

My worry is the drive might be tiring.
Is parking fee expensive? convenient to find?
Say if we go Mt.Hakodate…seems difficult to find parking there.
What’s ur suggestions?
Pls advise.
Thanks!

I would opt to drive. Since your children are old enough and they don’t need child seats, your family should be able to fit into an 8-seater car.

I haven’t had much difficulty finding parking in Hokkaido in general. Most of the attractions have their own parking. Within the cities, there are plenty of coin parking.

Parking can be expensive in the city. So what you can do is to pick up the car when you leave Hakodate and return the car when you reach Sapporo and just use public transport in the cities.

For Mount Hakodate, if you are planning to take the ropeway, I believe there is a parking lot at the bottom ropeway station? I have never driven up before so not sure of the parking situation at the top.

    Hello Queen Bee

Sorry I miss out the part that I reach CTS then need to make my way to Hakodate.

Contemplate whether to drive or rail to Hakodate cos is a long journey and after a long flight then proceed to drive can be tiring. + i’m not sure how the snow condition. Did think of rail to hakodate to let kids experience the train then car for Noburibetsu>Otaru>Sapporo return the car and we use public transport. And I will be stuck again cos the rail to Asahikawa Zoo is not cheap either 😛
Read the review some say the animals so ‘pathetic’ so wondering whether to go or not.

Sorry ya… giving you all my question marks???
Look forward for ur advice and pointers.

Oh.. I thought you were flying into Hakodate. Yeah, driving all the way to Hakodate right after arriving into CTS is very tiring. Even taking a train is extremely tiring. So I were flying into CTS, I would not start my trip in Hakodate.

What I would do then is to start the trip in Sapporo. Otaru can be done as a day trip on one of the days I’m in Sapporo. Then I would train down to Hakodate from Sapporo. And then when I’m leaving Hakodate, I would rent a car to drive up to Noboribetsu. Then from Noboribetsu I would drive back to CTS and return the car to CTS.

I think Asahiyama Zoo is a nice zoo. But it can be a bit pricey to visit it you are specially going to take the train there from Sapporo. I usually visit it when I’m on the way North / East. Furthermore for your dates, there is no penguin parade, so it may not be worth the time and money to go. Anyway you don’t have that many days, you can just spend the time exploring Sapporo.

    Hi Queen Bee

we decided to rent the car 🙂
Any nice stopovers as we drive from CTS to Hakodate?
Apart from the Lake Hill Farm?

btw, you mentioned that using the etc might be cheaper cos at times with discount?
cos we wondering whether to buy the HEP ( Y7200) or not?

From CTS to Hakodate, possible stops are Noboribetsu and Lake Toya is you want to do a bit of sightseeing. But if you are just looking for a rest station along the expressway without having to exit the expressway, you can take breaks at the following rest stations:
      > SA Usuzan: https://goo.gl/maps/5712fNunJJQ2
      > PA Yakumo: https://goo.gl/maps/c6eeSKjkG1A2

In general, if you are doing a return drive to Hakodate, you should get the HEP. The toll to Hakodate is quite expensive.
