Hokkaido in March for drift ice
Hokkaido in March for drift ice

Hi,

I am revisitting hokkaido next year between 20-26/3. I am planning to visit Shiretoko and Abashiri this time. Do you have any idea if the ice drift activities are still available around 25/3? Do you think its worth the visit? What are the things you would recommend me to do over there?

Thanks!

    Hi Mummy,

I have plan my trip to Hokkaido in Feb-16, and planning the itinerary as Sapporo (3 night) –> Tomamu (2 night) –> Lake Akan (3 night) –> Abashiri (1 night)

Can I check with you whether or not we can drive to & from between Lake Akan Tsuruga and Abashiri (Aurora ice breaker cruise) on the same day? Did you advise to do this? As I lazy to change hotel to Abashiri

I believe drift ice activities are still ongoing in March. However, do take note that some days there is no drift ice. Like when we were in Shiretoko, Abashiri and Monbetsu in March 2010, there was no drift ice on the days we were there so our drift ice activities were all cancelled and frankly we were pretty bored. It will be a great experience if weather is in your favour and drift ice appears when you are there. You will just have to take your chances. If there is no drift ice when you are there, you can just go around and eat. :p
